Some Advice| starting boxing..

    new to the forum yall:cool:
    I went by my local gym and am going to a boxing class tommorrow.
    im 18 y.o 5'11 lean 135lbs
    I've been watching alot of boxing and practicing with my own gloves and bag at home for a couple months now.
    The trainer at the gym seemed sane, and the gym seemed normal i guess

    What should I expect?

  2. Why should you be worried? No one is likely to be going to hit you for weeks. Perhaps longer. If it's a good gym they will start with footwork, stance and other basics. Just listen and learn.

    To be honest, I want to compete and think I have enough experience to be sparring pretty soon. I dont want to sound like I know what im doing but im a fast learner
    I was worried because im pretty thin and dont know how hard other thin guys hit

    Also another question, do you think they will try to correct my stance as i am a natural right handed southpaw most the time. Although I have been working orthodox

    Yeah. Make sure your trainer isn't an irresponsible egghead like mine was. Also make sure all the gyms fighters don't lose. If they are a bunch of losers, that's ok. Spar with them for 2 months and then move on to a better gym.

    well, i'm not sure how much we can tell you. Everybody's different. You'll either love it, or you'll hate it. Either way, you'll find out as soon as you start sparring.

    You're very tall for your weight class - that's a huge advantage. When you start sparring for the first time, you'll find your reach will frustrate a lot of fighters, but you are going to get very tired very fast and after a few rounds, it will feel like punishment, and not at all as fun as you'd imagined. This is natural. Until you learn to relax, and the movement becomes more natural, it will be like this for a while.

    You will either be extremely motivated to improve, or give up and go back to jiu-jitsu classes.

    Lol, no offense...I have huge respect for jiu-jitsu. I just find that a lot of guys who don't cut it at boxing end up taking jiu-jitsu!

    What he said I should work on :deal
    - footwork when on the inside (but I kinda felt more comfortbale throwing punches from there)
    - head movement on the outside while still in range
    - using my height (i didnt know what he meant but i thought i was "fighting tall" idk)

    What do you guys think?:thumbsup

    To be blunt, nobody at your gym cares what you think.

    A good tip is to forget this ego stuff, train hard and see what happens.

    lots of wall sits

    pro tip;

    Try to catch a couple pigeons and put them in a bamboo cage for later. You'll know what they're for when the time comes.

  14. Good advice. Some guys get ahead of themselves, thinking they are better than what they are and they only pay for it later on.

    Well I know my ability, but will heed your advice and wont spar till I am ready

    I think i'll be deleting this and just start a training log. Thanks guys
