No you have it wrong the BBBOC investigated unfounded charges in daily newspapers that messrs Duff and co operated an illegal cartel, they took 6 months to collate their findings and it culminated in a 6 hour hearing at the end of which Astaire,Duff, Lawless were totally vindicated. The Department of Fair Trade ruled that they had broken no laws of the land and had no case to answer. It all goes back to a 1967 Boxing News article when the fued between Levene,Astaire,Barrett and Duff and their adversary Jack Solomons became public. The headline was Battle For Power In British Boxing, the aforementioned names had their photos on the front page. Going back even further, in 1958 Duff and Astaire tabled a motion that only people without a financial interest in the game should sit on the area councils that govern the sport at grass roots level, it was passed and Solomons effectively lost his power bases . I have the Boxing News back to 1964 , they are all in the loft and I can't be arsed to go looking for the article.
The BBB of C investigated itself. There was no independence in such a investigation. The only thing that can be conclusively shown was FW's 'affiliation' with the NBC led to the BBB of C removing laws that meant they could affiliate themselves with WBA and offer FW membership of the BBB of C, when previously they had not.
No ,once again ,they investigated the so called cartel. As did H M 's government's Department Of Fair Trade. Both came to the same conclusion . NO CASE TO ANSWER
The Department of Trade (as it was at the time), concluded it did not need to investigate further. That does not mean there was no illegal activity. In this case it meant FW was happy with the situation, and the costs of further investigations were such, as to not be 'in the national interest'. The Judiciary, not the Executive in the UK make the judgements on legal and illegal activities. As I stated: The BBB of C recognized and changed laws in the early 80s, that if challenged they felt would of been considered illegal. Thus it is fair to claim that the 'cartel' of Duff et al was illegal.
FW? The BBBOC did not change the cartel though did they ? Cartels are not of themselves illegal and the one that was comprised of Duff and co was not found to be so .And it was the Office OF Fair Trade. What other things the BBBOC changed has no relevance to their investigation and subsequent exoneration of and into the "cartel ". Your circular logic does not stand up to scrutiny You seem determined to beleive there was illegality here, even though two seperate organizations investigated and found no case to answer. I guess we will have to agree to disagree.:good
I am more cynical than you; but as a fan of the sport you can be proud of your minority view. Your ability to not to get dragged down by us pessimistic *******s and your faith in the people who run the sport are admirable qualities.
RIP to Micky Duff, I don't know much about him but he seemed to leave a good impression on the boxers he managed. Interesting stuff, was Dick Turpin related to Randy Turpin by any chance?? I studied how the Mirror used to be a real investigative liberal paper years before my time. Pleasure to read your stuff as ever mate, a shame you have to put up with the window licking David Icke brigade. Those of us with an IQ over single digits are ignoring them.
Are you still here? Why are you allowed to post here, did you kidnap the mods or pay them off ? It must be difficult being you, waking up, looking in the mirror. You know I would probably be angry as well if I had to be you. It must be tough getting scraped off of people's shoes like shlt that was accidentally stepped into. Even the other assholes who post on here have there limits, they will ***** and rag on each other because they actually know what they're spatting and for the most part after arguing they would have a pint or nine and slap the barmaids ass who just brought it to them and laugh about it and that is why I like to sit back and read all of their BS . You on the other hand are yesterday's shitticket (toilet paper) that I flushed or you probably are more familiar with term sanitary napkin. I told your almond size brain to go and find the fvcking hot grease and submerge, We are all dying to hear about your stamp collection as well. Anything under your parents sink that has words printed on it like "Danger" or "Poison, do not drink" and maybe has a few crossbone emblems on them , don't worry about all that riff raff, they put that stuff on there to keep the children from hurting themselves but you are a "Cretin" and these choice brews will improve your quality of life, so go on and chug a lug Nancy. Have a wonderful evening
I think I'm quite cynical really ,as far as Duff and co are concerned they were certainly no worse than Solomons who preceded them or ****** who came after. During their reign Britain saw its largest collection of world champions, financially good for them certainly, but also their fighters, and us the boxing fans. As far as the BBBOC goes its certainly less autocratic than it was under the skeletal Onslow Fane, and probably the premier promoter today does not have quite the cosy relationship with Bob Smith that Duff enjoyed with their then Secretary Ray Clarke Speaking of Smith, about a year ago I asked him when smelling salts had been banned in the UK,[it was a query concerning the first Cooper Ali fight,] his answer was "aint got a clue", not very reassuring. The BBBOC is self appointed,[ like the Jockey Club,] but by and large I think they do a pretty good job , particularly compared to some of their overseas counterparts.
Duke Mckenzie gave a wonderful tribute to Duff on Box Nation the other night, he even managed to silence Mr Squeaky Bunce for a while. Dick was Randy's brother. Yes the Mirror was a crusading tabloid when I was young, it appears to be an extension of The Sun nowadays. I buy the Sunday Times for Mcllvanney, my partner gets the I ,and I read the review section of the Telegraph in the pub on a Saturday. I don't worry about the ******s for myself ,I think I can give as good as I get, but I do think we may lose some of the better posters because of morons like Foxy abusing all and sundry. I hope you don't become a target because of your positive comments about me, which by the way are much appreciated.
