So you think Fitzgerald is absolute ****? Fair enough. Just remember how close he ran Andy Lee. Bear that in mind the next time guys on here are cheering for poor Andy to be sent in with GGG. Some "fans" cant wait for it to happen. If GGG v Lee is proposed again would you therefore join me in condemning that fight, Lee v GGG, as as case of lamb to the slaughter?
I think Hurricane vs. Fitzy would be a cracking battle...and would favor Hogan, but do consider Fitzgerald a step above most of Hogan's domestic Aussie peers.
no andy lee had an off nite against fitzgerald... andy lee is in boxing 2 fite the best... if he gets beat he gets beat:good
Reply to Fra about Andy Lee: Anyone with top-level talent in any field should try to be the best, thats true. But Andy is not top-level. We all hoped - none more than me - that he would be top-level when he turned pro, but he has turned out not to be. Its time to accept that.
Lee had world class potential but was always matched poorly. (both with opponents and trainers: his two losses and the near-miss with Fitzy were down to bad timing and/or poor selection, as he was rushed in too early with Vera who despite having less sum experience than many of Lee's prior opponents had mixed at the higher level and was too rapid a step up...he later proved in the rematch that he was more than up to it once ready...then Chavez despite possessing vastly inferior skill was simply too big and too iron-chinned, it was always going to be a matter of Lee getting broken down after starting well...and Fitzy, well, he overlooked him and made comments in the lead-up that Fitz didn't even belong in the ring with him, even though he acknowledged Fitz to be a tough guy unlikely to be overawed...basically just a bit more bit off than he should've expected to easily chew in his first outing with a new trainer; with all due respect to both Adam Booth and the late great Emanuel Steward, neither was probably the ideal fit to be Lee's coach and help teach him to play to all his strengths...)
:good Hogan is from nearby Kildare, was he a hot ticket in the area during his long amateur career? Enough for his professional homecoming to allow him to perhaps draw big enough a crowd to rival Fitzey's and make for that rare atmosphere with two equally loud contingents?
Irish boxers are **** Khan > Mccloskey even uzzy ahmed and adil anwar are better than all irish boxers
There may be something in what you say, Buttsy. But you focus on "luck" in your post. Luck is important for a fighter (even the great French heavyweight Napoleon acknowledged that!). But how much bad luck can Andy have had ?- Unfortunate choice of opponents, unfortunate choice of trainers, unfortunate timing of fights???....The thing about luck is that it evens out over time. Andy has had 10 years. I see you start by saying Andy had world class potential.... the words "had" and "potential" are significant here. Two questions really: 1.Do you now accept that Andy is not world class and is not going to be. 2. Would you join me in condemning a Lee v GGG fight as a stupid and potentially dangerous mismatch.
Considering he will only be getting in one more tuneup before reaching 30, yeah, the window is probably closed on his aspirations to join the world champion elite (or even just try on a belt) - and yet we still haven't seen a fair sampling of what the Booth & Lee combination is capable of after some time working together versus serious opposition. I am withholding anything like final summary judgment until then. The rumored Macklin or N'Dam N'Jikam bouts would have been very telling as to whether or not he belongs at that level or higher. Most likely, no, he does currently not and probably won't conceivably ever belong in the ring with a Golovkin...but that may just put him in the same boat as the rest of the MW contenders and not be any great knock on his ability. He needs to step up, though, if we are to effectively gauge where he stands among that pack.
It is hard to see Andy turn into a top-level middleweight at this stage alright. Hard to see what "untapped potential" Booth can tap into. But we all know the sort of thigs that go on in boxing. Andy fights some cab driver - wins, then he steps up a bit (a roadsweeper perhaps?) etc. Next thing you know he has strung a few wins together. He has a "name". He will always be somewhat credible and marketable. Then in 6 months or a years time the phone rings - GGG has a date but no opponent.....Hey Presto Andy v GGG is on. Wouldnt mind if he beat one or two live ones and then got a shot at someone like Quillin. Now that sort of thing might be feasible, but not GGG.
Fully agree, if he builds up a head of steam there is no reason Lee mightn't be able to challenge Quillin and be in with a shot (more realistic than with Golovkin, in any event). The slew of common opponents (Dennis Sharpe, LUD6 to Lee and LTKO4 to Quillin; Craig McEwan, LTKO10 to Lee and LTKO6 to Quillin; Troy Lowry, LTKO4 to Lee and LTKO2 to Quillin - and Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam, LUD12 to Quillin in the pros and WPTS on callback over Lee in the Athens Olympics) would lend it salable luster, along with both of them being gifted offensive-minded fighters haunted by seemingly uncorrectable flaws....
