If he were white, definitely. The great white hope sells. Most of the US is white. And let's face it, we relate better to our own ethnicity, whatever that may be. Had Pavlik gone on to big things, he would've been huge because America is always looking for the next great, white fighter.

Now if he were black, he would probably be less popular because Pac doesn't have much of a personality and in boxing, you need more than just skills to transcend the sport. So a great, black fighter with no personality will probably find it hard. Just ask Andre Ward or Tim Bradley. Granted they aren't as exciting as Pac but it just shows you need some X factors to transcend the sport.

 

The Cooney-Holmes fight is one of the most hyped fights in history and a lot of it had to do with the fact that Cooney was white. Now imagine a white fighter with the actual skills and talents who wins titles in 8 divisions and kos people in impressive fashion? He would've been the greatest thing sinced sliced bread.
