Andre Ward is hated for the same reason Gene Tunney was hated back in his day. Andre Ward is an intellectual.

Boxing fans have always hated boxers who have above-average intelligence. They want boxers to be mindless thugs. They don't like thinking that a boxer could be smarter than they are.

In this video, Gene Tunney's son explains this phenomenon:

    They hate Ward because,

    1. The likes of Kessler, Froch, GGG, Kovalev can't beat him

    2. They can never be him

I'd never hate a fighter for being smart

There is legit reasons for certain people hating ward eg. Head butting, excessive holding, failure to move up and take big fights, inactivity ,rarely fighting outside his home state and always seems to have a ref that doesn't deduct or disqualify for head butting or excessive holding. Also because his inactivity I don't think he should be considered p4p number 2 anymore

    "Ward is an intellectual'!:lol::lol::lol:

    Compared to what?

He is probably above average in terms of functional grey matter compared to most American athletes but calling him an intellectual is borderline hyperbole.

What exactly are his academic credentials?

The #1 reason why Ward gets lots of stick is because he's a stay at home fighter (just look how those are viewed over here, Calslappy, Ottke). And because he was in the Super 6 tourney, where the importance of home advantage was shown very clearly, probably strengthens that opinion.

Plus he's known for 'bending' the rules, like holding and hitting, headbutting, pushing etc. The fact he does that with home advantage on his side leaves that unpunished.

Then he's known to be arrogant and having his faith routine in the ring.

Of course there are people here who resent him for different reasons, but I think the above covers the lot. And he doesn't look very smart to me.
It's just like saying that fans hate Wlad for being an intellectual, while that's clearly not the case.

People don't embrace Ward because he has the personality of a discarded cigarette butt. Plus, unfortunately, he has the facial features of someone who is bored or stoned.

And his whole S.O.G schtick would embarass Holyfield, Pac and even Fred Phelps.

Intellectual my arse. The guy simply comes across as a tool, despite the obvious boxing prowess.

It would embarrass them because he actually lives what he preaches. Does he come across as self-righteous at times? Absolutely, but I'd rather that than someone talking about God on Sunday, then banging hookers and gambling compulsively every other day of the week.

    Yeah I said it.

    P.S.

Nothing wrong with gambling, but gambling away all of your money is idiotic.

Gene Tunney didn't have any "academic credentials", but he was seen as an intellectual because he used his brain outside of the ring, something that most boxers don't do.

Let's face it: people who become boxers are usually not the smartest people in the world.

Andre Ward outside the ring is a student of boxing, of religion, and of philosophy. He tries to have a mental edge over his opponents, so he can compensate for the physical shortcomings he has (like power and chin).

Boxing fans see a guy like that and they say he's boring, but really they just don't like him personally. They want fighters that they can look down on. They want to feel superior to fighters.

Who wants to watch this guy? He like a professor!:

I admire Ward as a fighter. I do however understand why some people have a problem with some of his choices. He had the red carpet rolled out for him from the very beginning of the super six despite the fact he wasn't a world champion.

Secondly he seems to reluctant to make big fights post super six despite the fact he'd most probably win easily. It was plain to see he didn't want to fight Bute even though we know he'd have dismantled the guy.

He only fights in Oakland despite the fact he is not a huge draw there and his oppnents can pull massive numbers.

He is a dirty fighter who isn't afraid to cheat to win. Some of his headbutts and the like have been atrocious and he's been allowed to just get away with it.

He's happy to drag people up or down in weight but won't go up or down himself.

He fights infrequently. He doesn't seek out the best opponents.

These criticisms are all valid. Ward is clearly immensely talented. It's just a shame he doesn't act like it.
