    :p

I know - but when I think back to the level of exposure Barry had at the same stage of his career - no comparison is there?

Just watched Late late - Tubridy had to intro Frampton "from scratch" as if he was talking about a complete stranger - and sadly to most viewers tonight Carl and his boxing career IS a complete stranger.

By way of contrast - in Barrys last fight before he fought for the title - versus Juan LaPorte (his best ever performance IMO) - Barry was literally a household name. I didnt know a single man (or woman ) who didnt know all about Barry McGuigan.

And right there is the problem with boxings shrinking popularity today.

Surely the general population's knowledge of McGuigan (compared with Frampton today) was more down to the social/political situation at the time? After all he was seen as someone who brought both sides of the divide together during the troubles.
I wouldn't say it has anything to do with boxing's shrinking popularity!

No - "it wasnt that he was seen as someone who brought both sides together"
    - it was that he was SEEN full stop.
As was Benn Eubank Tyson etc etc - all seen regularly fighting every few weeks (every few months at the most).
Exposure. The public want what the public get. etc etc

Framps is nowhere near as well known as Barry was at the same stage in their careers..

Of course Barry was always more outgoing and lively with the media too - no disrespect to Carl, but he could "sell himself" a bit better.
I dont care myself - Im a fan anyway - but to appeal to a wider public a bit more "personality" wouldnt hurt!
    :thumbsup

The fact that boxing is not on terrestrial tv is massive you only need to look recently at how popular Dunne became, why because he was on RTE everybody could watch him fight and you had the biggest broadcaster in Ireland hyping him up. Frampton being on Boxnation is unfortunately the reason he isn't more known in Ireland, i can see it changing though if he wins a world title. I mean look at the Sports News on Rte no mention of his fight's even a mention that he is fighting on Friday and that it is for a final eliminator for the WBC ect would plant the name Carl Frampton into the head of your casual Sports fan. Boxing not being on ITV, RTE ect is what's stopping fighters becoming more known.

It was a 2-way street as I recall:
British boxing crowd were happy to claim such a successful boxer as one of their own ("our British boy" was a term used to describe him on BBC)....and Barry was quite happy to wrangle his way to being "eligible" to fight for and win the "British title", a very useful title to hold - despite being no more "British" than I am....

(Barrys home was in the village of Clones - in County Monaghan, in the Irish Republic)

By the way it was and still is to this day his nickname among Republicans in the SOUTH!!

Ward backing up too easily in the first minute, it'll be a long fight for him.

Conlon won in his WSB bout 50-45 on all judges score cards.

All rounds were reasonably close but Conlon was the aggressor and landed the better shots and was more busy
