How to improve left hook? I want to have so devastating left hook like Gennady Golovkin and Sergey Kovalev or any other good left hooker. What are good exercises to improve left hook?
Understand, study the mechanics of the punch, I think the secret is understanding the kinetic link, between the Thumb, Shoulder, Elbow, Hip, and knee. Then a good stretch program that implements it.
Ya I have studied the left hook mechanics. There's great video where Lamon Brewster shows how to throw left hook: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rk2h6E6cd8Y
The most important thing is that you throw the left/rt hook off your front foot. Now there are all kinds of way to position your self to do that. Also keep your left arm close to your body. And when punching keeping as tight as possible. Punch with your body so as your left arm is just an extension of your body. Of course you change weight and turn your body as you punch.
If you throw it off your front foot, you are really limiting yourself. Same as is you only throw it like Brewster talks about in his video. If you are throwing the hook behind a right hand, then it will be off your front foot because that is where your weight will be. Same thing if you make the move to get over and throw the hook to the liver. But if that is how you always throw it, the only was, you are constantly dipping into his right hand. Watch Trinidad vs Hopkins. You telegraph the hell out of the punch. How do you slip outside a jab and counter with a hook if you are punching off the front foot? You can't and that is a great counter. Also, it messes up your right hand, should you want to throw one after the left hook.
Yeah, definitely don't throw with the weight on the front foot. Good power behind a hook requires proper balance on both feet. Honestly, the most perfect explanation will never do you any good. You just have to learn by feel. And the best practice for hooks, is by actually DOING hooks, repeatedly - over and over. Make sure a coach or experienced boxer can correct any bad/incorrect form you might be doing. As far as good exercises, it's such a complex range of movement, there's no 2 or 3 exercises that will help with a left hook. But for punching power in general, make sure to do a lot of leg strengthening exercises and abdominal/core exercises. And i'm not talking simple sit ups/curls, or leg press exercises - those single movement exercises are very limiting. Try strengthening exercises that make you "twist" your core or make you do more complex movements with your legs.
I can't make it any simpler. They all throw it off their front foot. As mentioned, there are 101 ways/moves to get there. But you must be able to change weight to build power.
Ill try too, stand with your knees bent 10%. With elbows to your side of ribs hands palms up with thumbs turned down, heels slightly of floor. Now, quick as you can turn the hand down, palm down, feel the kinetic link with thumb and hip. Thats one reason to turn your shots. You should drop onto the thing that is generating power, the floor, with both feet.
What also helped me with my left hook is to make sure my forearm was parallel with the ground Whether you throw it with your thumb pointing up or your palm facing to the floor, you should look to do this when throwing hooks to the head
Not so. You finish with your weight on your back foot when throwing a hook. Your right hand starts off the back foot and ends on the front and if you follow with a hook, your weight changes back to your back foot. You maintain your balance with these suttle weight changes while punching.
Throwing a right hand, if your weight goes on the front foot, you lose power its your biomechanical break. If your fist while throwing the left hook, goes past the back shoulder you cant generate power. You are off balance simple. Plus where the head is, you dont want to get countered.
Ok. You are determined not to comprehend. I am not a newbie and have been doing this along time. Suit yourself and good luck.
