I don't see anyone discussing this, but apparently Ward is stirring up some bad blood, and Kovalev doesn't have an opponent.

Ward talked about moving up a division in the past, and considering there is no one left to fight at 168, outside of Chavez of course, why not fight Kovalev now?

I can see it from Ward's perspective in the sense that's he's waiting for a Chavez fight; however, Chavez is currently in negotiations with GGG, so that takes both Chavez and GGG off the table.

Froch and Groves are fighting again, so that takes them off the table for the time being.

Besides, assuming Froch wins, that fight will always be there. It can take place at 175 or a catchweight.

For Kovalev, Stevenson is not planning on fighting him and Pascal and Hopkins are both Showtime fighters. There is nobody worth anything, that's left for him to fight due to circumstances brought upon due to Mayweather's avoidance of Pacquaio, (causing a rift between networks).

Kovalev doesn't have a fight lined up.

Ward doesn't have a fight lined up.

    Both are HBO fighters.

    Should they fight?

here's the thing....it makes sense to fans because we just want to see fights. we live in the age where everyone wants everything instantly. need a phone number or location? google it. want something to eat? order it online and it's at your door minutes later. well...the thing with a boxers career...these things don't happen over night. it takes years of practice and sacrifice for guys like kovalev and ward to get where they are. every move to get this point was calculated and executed. just because hbo and the fans want it don't mean they will get it. there are a lot of factors to consider. one...ward has paid his dues and should be in the drivers seat for any negotiations in this bout. being in the drivers seat means he can determine when and where and he should get the lions share of the purse. two...kovalev hasn't really done much to deserve a shot at ward to be honest. let him unify or beat some better opponents first. three...at this point, ward would be taking more risk by moving up in weight to fight kovalev. why would he do that when he's already established himself as the man at 168? catchweight fights are bull**** imo. ward is making 168 comfortably and moving up in weight would lose him two potentially big pay days against chavez and ggg. let kovalev increase his stature by beating fighters we actually know. the fight happens when it's supposed to...in the future.

Did Edwin Rodriguez deserve a fight with Ward?

I don't think Ward has to worry about Chavez and GGG. The fight will still be there in the future.

It's just one fight at 175.

Ward could make 175 comfortably, so he won't have to stress his body to get under the limit.

Remember, Ward fought at 175 in the amateurs.

Wouldn't it be better for Ward to fight and beat Kovalev before setting up a super fight with the winner of Chavez vs GGG?

Why should Ward just sit around and wait for Chavez and GGG when there is no guarentee of them fighting him?

Kovalev would probably accept the lesser share to fight Ward, so why not make it happen?

Additionally, the best time to fight Kovalev is now while he's still green.

rodriguez was undefeated and highly ranked. it was also a comeback fight for ward after his shoulder surgery.

fighting kovalev before chavez or ggg would be putting the carraige before the horse.

    chavez vs ggg

    ggg vs ward

    ward vs ggg

these are all legacy building fights that will generate big money for all parties. kovalev is new on the scene. he'll get his shot when the time is right.

from a business standpoint....ward deserves more money and big time fights.

fights against ggg and chavez would be ppv events as much as i don't like to admit it.

a fight with kovalev should be ppv as well because both parties deserve to be paid accordingly. at this point...a ppv between kovalev and ward will tank. they need to build that up.

The way I look at it, that's even more reason for Ward to fight Kovalev now.

If Ward wins, he has a hell of a lot of momentum and can go back down and fight GGG and Chavez and make us, (the consumers), pay out the ass to watch it.

Simeltaneously, Kovalev still has fights at 175...potentially at least, if he can manage to get a fight made with some of the guys on Showtime.

Admittedly, Kovalev needs Ward more than Ward needs Kovalev, but that's even more reason for Ward to make the fight.

I'm sure he could even negotiate a catch weight if necessary.

He would also have the fight in his hometown and get the lion's share of the purse.

It's wins all across the board for Ward.

They aren't fighting anyone. Does Ward intend on sitting out for years?

look at sergio martinez. this guy basically took on a string of opponents and won in impressive fashion over a few year span. imo...there aren't many on his level, but with all that hard work, the public still doesn't know who he is. he's finally going to make some serious money...and he's going to be on the b side in a show where he should be the a side. it's fcuked up...but it's part of the sport. had he played his cards a little differently, he may have been in a better spot but the problem is he isn't aligned with a big time promoter. ward is in a similar situation. there is no second chance to get this right. one wrong move and your pay drops significantly. i can't blame ward for being patient and doing it the right way. he maintains his dignity and doesn't get the short end of the stick like martinez.

i love some of the things posters say when it comes to Ward vs Kovalev...

"he hasn't done anything to deserve the fight"

though Chavez had? a drunk Pavlik without a win in years? Rodriguez? the stiff that Ward wanted instead of Rodriguez but HBO wouldn't allow?

but he can't fight GGG, Kovalev, Bute or Kovalev, the best in and around his weight class, because they "haven't earned the right"?

clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right... and i'm stuck in the middle of you jokes.

if you're a 7 year old lying about pinching cookies while you have Chocolate round your mouth, i could understand. but being an adult and coming out with this utter garbage? you should feel ashamed.

Ward is American. you're American. Kovalev would smash holes in Ward if he ever had the courage to fight him. you're scared of that happening. your biased and foolish excuses should be seen for what they are. A. LOAD. OF. ****!!!!

This is the best fight at 168 or is Kovalev 175?

Tough for Ward to go up in weight and fight this beast. Especially since they will make much less money than they deserve. This fight would outrank any of Floyd's achievements to date if Ward could win.

I'd like to see Ward vs either Stevenson or Kovalev after one of them establishes supremacy in the division, right now it feels a bit premature although it would still be a great fight.

get your homotions in check. boxing at this level is a business. learn about risk vs reward. i see no crime in ward waiting for his paydays against 2 ppl who have expressed interest in fighting him at 168. did you hold hagler to the same standard when he never moved up in weight? learn your history.
