It might just do, you never know. Then again, what did Briggs do to get a shot at Vitali in the first place? Briggs is like Zab Judah (ironically also from Brooklyn and another 4 round fighter), he keeps getting undeserved title shots. Imo, this was a way of mimicking Hayes antics into getting a title shot. Although Haye did deserve it slightly more than Briggs.
The first time I ever saw him live was against a fighter named Darrol Wilson. It was an HBO card which was show casing some of the other prospects at the time. I believe it was the same night that Tua dropped ruiz within seconds. Briggs was touted as a major talent, but that changed quickly when Wilson dispatched him. The next time I saw him was a bit later against a near 50 George Foreman whom I thought was robbed. After that I was basically done giving Briggs any props.
I agree that "good" fighters are undervalued in boxing forum discussions because we're constantly gauging them to the best of the best, and furthermore agree that it is painfully annoying. But Shannon Briggs can't be credited with any real wins of note. George Foreman was maybe 15 months shy of his 50th birthday and most of us felt he deserved the nod. Briggs dropped some bad losses to guys who weren't even ranked and did it when he was supposed to be prime. For whatever its worth, I think he has the record for most first round knockouts at heavyweight and has a very pale claim to being a lineal champion. But I don't know if its enough.....
In no way would I disrespect any fighter let alone a world champion. But if we compare Shannon Briggs to other good heavyweight champs, then we have to be honest: He clearly lost the fight against Foreman, something like 8 rounds to 4. So he shouldn't have won that world title. He won his other world title by knocking out Lyakhovich in the last seconds of the last round while he was behind on the scorecards. Briggs has tons of first round knockouts but he was fighting guys that they dragged out of a bar right before the fight. But: if you want to watch one fight which defines Briggs, then watch his fight against Lennox Lewis: he hurt Lennox, at one point almost knocked him out and Briggs gave everything he had that night.
I think Briggs/Lewis was one of the few times where Lewis was caught by a left hook (after making a career of beating left hookers) I think Lewis was gone in the first round but the ropes kept him up.
I think Mike Tyson has the best first round knockout record. No he doesn't have the most, as Shannon Briggs, Tye Fields, Buddy Baer and Jack Dempsey are all ahead of him, but the variety of guys that he sparked in the first round include men like Spinks, Williams, M. Frazier, Alex Stewart, Bruce Seldon, etc. The variety that those other guys beat before the first bell were mostly trash.
By the way, I recently watched a Briggs interview in which he said that Botha was one of the top 2 hardest punchers he ever fought. He said Botha has deceptive speed and deceptive power. Lots of guys say how Botha doesn't look like much if you watch him from outside, but if you are in the ring with him, it is a different story.
I have made numerous posts about this before, i normally copy/paste what i wrote reg this subject. Tyson kod many durable fighters very early and easily. Mitch Green - Tyson couldnt Ko this guy, Mitch Green boxed on for a further 20 years after facing Tyson, no one ever stopped him. Smith - stunk the fight out so bad and did his best to hug and hold to make it to the final bell, one of the worst fights ever. Tillis - Tysons first step up, he was still green and fighting an experienced journeyman whod been in with Biggs, Coetzee, Frazier, Witherspoon, Williams, Page, Thomas, Shavers and Weaver before facing Tyson. Tucker - the only guy who fought both Lewis/Tyson (apart from Holyfield) and was stopped by neither, he also fought much better versions of both Tyson and Lewis than Holy did. Between them Tyson/Lewis Kod Bruno, Botha, Biggs, Golota and Ruddock. Berbick - Tyson destroyed Berbick, who boxed on for another 14 years and was never stopped again. Thomas - Tyson was the first guy to Ko Thomas Holmes - Tyson was the first and only guy to ever Ko Holmes and Holmes boxed into his 50s Spinks - Undefeated and Tyson was the first not only to drop Spinks, but KO him as well. Biggs - was undefeated and Tyson was the first person to Ko him Tubbs - Tyson was the first person to Ko Tubbs and he did it in 2 rounds, something Bowe struggled to pull off. Mathis Jr - fought Bowe, Biggs, Williams. Tyson was the first to stop him Savarese - Fought Holyfield, Foreman, Izon, Grant, Buster Douglas. Tyson was the only one who stopped him in one round. Ruddock - has a controversial loss to David Jaco apparently the fight was stopped due to him having an asthma attack, Tyson was the first guy to properly TKO Ruddock. Etienne - would go on to beat Brewster (who beat you know who), he fought Valuev, Oquendo, Botha, Brock. Tyson was the only one who Kod him in 1rd Stewart -fought Foreman, Holyfield, Moorer, Maskaev. Tyson was the only one who stopped him in one round. Bruno - lost to punchers like Witherspoon, Lewis and Smith. Tyson stopped him twice, both times quicker than the rest. Williams - fought Tillis, Holmes, Ferguson, Weaver, Cooper, Morrison, Berbick, Witherspoon, Bruno. Tyson was the only one to KO him in one round Tyson was wiping the floor with these guys
Kind of a misleading sales pitch there. Green fought exactly EIGHT times over the next 20 years, against crap opposition, and incidentally he WAS stopped by a tomato can with like an 8-22 record named Bruce Johnson.. The rest of your post is good.
