Calzaghe haters are desperate. They point to Calzaghe suffering a KD in each of his last 2 fights, but fail to mention how he was up immediately, wasnt on wobbly legs, won the fights, and was on the attack and not having to hold, and fail to note how Calzaghe was never KOd amm or pro, never had to hold to survive, never staggering round the ring. Funny how people forget fighters like Jones KD to Del Valle and how Hopkins was put down by Mercado and they both were looking on rubber legs
Calzaghe beat him when Hopkins was sandwiched between his 2 great boxing runs. That gets to his haters, I know it does.
You guys understand that Calzaghe never fought a natural 175 lbs guy Kovalev is oversized for 175, this alone limits CalZaghe output and punch resistance...Calzaghe vs GGG is possible win for CalZaghe in the classic way he did it...Kovalev doesn't fit the profile of a CalZaghe opponent :bart
Heres more to add to the insecurity of the Calzaghe haters. Tell me who has the best last 2 wins Hopkins or Kovalev? You decide
Yes, Hopkins had a good run around the time of the Calzaghe fight, that doesn't mean he was in his prime though. Lets put it this way, after Frazier and Norton, Goerge Foreman's other best win is Moorer, now does that mean Foreman was in his prime when he beat Moorer? No of course it doesn't, only a drooling simpleton would think it does, the same as anyone claiming Hopkins was at his best when he was unlucky to not get the nod against Calzaghe. Guys like Foreman and Hopkins are all time greats so the normal rules don't apply, they are still capable of performing to a certain level even when well past their best.
Nope but did Foreman go on to do outstanding things in the 90's? He beat Moorer, fair play to him. Was a great win. But then he goes on to beat Axel Shulz, Savarese.... and avoiding Lennox/other top fighters all the while. We both know this! Hopkins is still champion @ 49 years of age. Wins over Pavlik/Pascal/Jones/Cloud/Murat. And before that, he beat Winky was it? And Tarver. Fking insane.
You'd have to favour Calzaghe simply because Kovalev is yet to be tested against elite opposition like Calzaghe was. Style wise I don't think it's an easy fight for Calzaghe. Kovalev fights at a pretty high pace himself though of course not as high as Calzaghes. Kovalev hits harder than anyone Joe has fought and is an offensive machine the likes of which Calzaghe has never had to face. Calzaghe is also the smaller man and was dropped in both the fights he had at 175lbs so while he does have a proven chin that was mainly against smaller opposition than Kovalev.
And he also lost (twice) to Taylor and again to Dawson in a much more clear fashion than he did to Calzaghe. Do rank both of these men in the upper echelons of boxing greats seeing as you put so much stock into Calzaghe getting dropped and scrapping a debatable SD against the old man?
Tough one. Joe is more proven and is faster. Kovalev is stronger and more powerful. Joe did like a brawl which could get him in trouble against a guy like Kovalev but then he's also shown he can adapt and out box guys when he needs to. I'll pick Calzaghe to out land him, out speed him and out box him simply because he's more proven.
How was it any way debatable? It's only debatable to Hopkins fanboys. It was a clear win for Calzaghe. Most of the world had it a Calzaghe win. Hopkins was in the mid 40's while beating PASCAL, arguably twice, a fighter who ranks very highly at LHW today, who just beat Bute btw. Hopkins is doing things fighters in the past have only dreamed of. For you to take away Hopkins' accomplishments. Shame on you sir. A loss here and there is unavoidable. He's in his 40's and doing all those great things. A title holder @ 49 years of age and might beat Shumenov in 17 days. That is also a GREAT win
Roy was a heavy handed fighter when he sat down on his punches but after he came back down from heavy he lost a lot of power. As well as being gun shy totally shot to ****. Hopkins was screwed by the judges joe after the fight cards were read looked like he had just got away with robbery Hopkins won 7rds with a knock down I can't get over people saying Hopkins was his best win. Hopkins was f&ck£d over
Kov stops joe But need to see him fight a south paw first to make a my mind completely Kov(robocop) gets sparked by Stevenson watch this space Stevenson destroys joe
