Durabilty, pAtience, stamina , l find it hard to say power. Heart was good obviously, adaptability is another one that comes to mind. The more I watch of him the harder it's to say he could hang with Holmes , Lewis , the kilts, FOREMAN, Tyson . Maybe just maybe Ali. Did he just come along at the right time , what is it that dazzles people about this guy other than his 49-0 mark?
There was a lot of obvious stuff... two handed power, stamina, heart, strength, accurate, chin..... but a lot of great fighters had all of that. I think the main thing was looking easy to beat whilst being hard to beat. Awkwardness and unpredictable rhythm is what set him apart among great fighters. Everyone else looked great, smooth, conventional and natural.
If only "JohnGarfield" was still with us. I remember his personal insight into this subject being fascinating. R.I.P.
You can say he trained like a monk, was brave , had great power etc. But will and particularly will to win is it for me. He refused to be conquered.
I'm just going to say what I think it is. Defeat was not even within the realm of his conceptual thinking. He couldn't imagine himself losing to anyone..
thickness thick arms thick legs etc thick head no joke he take punches well thick wallet lol tight with money
Because it rarely gets mentioned. Feinting. He was great at faking with both hands to move his opponents into his power shots. The famous Walcott KO was set up by one of the most perfect feints ever filmed.
He had many strengths, but his most outstanding one was his focus. He probably suffered from what we would today call obsessive compulsive disorder. Take away his near fanatical preparation, and it is unlikely that he is a dominant champion. It seems inescapable that his mindset made the difference between him being a good fighter and a great one.
