Haye was dropped hard by a super middle weight and took his only ko loss from a cruiserweight. The 'heavy' does not always win as has been proved throughout boxing's history.
Except that that wasn't a ko, but a tko. Haye simply gassed himself trying to take out a durable veteran in few rounds like he was used to do, and he punched himself out. Also Haye had to cut weight to be able to compete at cruiserweight, and he wasn't at his full potential. Thompson was landing all kind of power punches on him, and yet he couldn't take him out. Again, the heavyweight wins, always. We're not in the 70s anymore, when a middleweight could have 30 fights, then fat up to cruiserweight weight, and be allowed to fight at "heavyweights" with his entire career listed at heavyweight while having fought once or twice there. Because that was the kind of stuff that happened back then.
