getting "rocked" in a fight he was clearly winning pretty handily is a weak a$s excuse for stopping it. the only reason its not a big deal is because the guy was an unknown and was there to be an opponent..... had a GGG. PAC, or Sergio Martinez had a fight stopped like that there would be conspiracy theories, corruption, and allegations of crooked refs and promoters. too bad the guy didnt have the ref from cunningham vs mansour...obviously that ref doesnt panic after a big punch. totally different outcome with that ref :-(
WWSSD? (What Would Steve Smoger Do?) New reffing meme. You are right though, if that had been an HBO/SHO A-side the outcry would be huge.
Sad to see that win taken away from him, but yeah he looked out at that moment and he jumped in and I may not have thought anything BUT he was in that predicament TWICE earlier in the fight it seemed and worked his way back. I wouldve rather seen him get a standing 8 or a chance to hold. Btw dude needs to learn to hold when he needs. If Smoger reffed he wouldve won. I have seen that ref many times in Philly and don't ever recall him being questionable before.
Johnson as definitely hurt, but had the fight gone on, there wasn't enough time left on the clock for Stevens to put him down. Bad stoppage. I thought I was watching a fight in England.
I don't know, that guy was about to get ****ed up. Stevens was throwing fast AND hard. Stevens had a lot left and he hit the dude straight on the chin like 5 or 6 times in a row. He was about to beat the **** outta that guy. They can rematch, but the guy got stopped.
No, I just watched it and it's a shame that johnson fought so well only to get careless at the end w/ an always dangerous puncher like stevens, but he was out of it. You could see after the ref jumped in that it took johnson a couple seconds to realize what transpired and then he started protecting. Had the ref not jumped in, stevens would have been teeing off and eventually would've had a defenseless guy in front of him. The ref has to do his job. Johnson should look at the tape and blame himself for not being more cautious in the last round in a fight he would've won handliy had it gone the distance.
It was a great card. I'm impressed that NBC was able to put together and execute a dynamic competition of both MW & HW boxing that exceeds the action of most PPV events. Hopefully, NBC will receive enough praise from this card to motivate them to put together and bring even more free and exciting boxing matches in the future.
deal For once you say something I actually agree with. If I were HBO I would be embarrassed right now, NBCSN just put on the best card of the year thus far for 1/10 the cost of a BAD card.
"about to get ****ed up" atsch glad you can see the future. he didnt even get knocked down yet....he stole that mans "O" :-(
stupid logic atsch seems like Johnson was penalized for taking a good shot and NOT going down. yet somehow steve cunningham who wasnt being "cautious" either got dropped twice while being hurt and is allowed to continue early in the fight not the final minutes of the last round. it was a garbage stoppage
You always get punished getting hurt and not going down. The worst thing you can do when hurt is go back to the ropes and stay up. It let's a guy tee-off on a defenseless fighter, which is considerably more dangerous long term than going down. It was a quick stoppage, but dude was rocked and Stevens was teeing off and Johnson was turtling down when the ref came in. Guy was done.
its not like the guy took any damage up to that point. you come off like he is somehow gonna take 100 more solid shots in a row had he not stopped because he hadnt fallen after the first few big shots. :-( the ref should have taken in account he was winning, was undefeated, and barley anytime left, and not even went down. not that hard to figure out.
