Burns is at a crossroads now, as we all know he hasn't looked good in his last few fights, seems to be on the decline so why not take a risk? New coach, new ideas, it could well do him the world of good. A US based trainer would seem to make more sense aswell, somebody mentioned Roach who would be an outstanding candidate if he were willing to take him on.

Refreshing to see no hint of bitterness from either party, they achieved great things together, and that should not be forgotten.

No doubt a few trolls will be 'gloating' upon hearing the news, but it really does not matter, the results and achievements speak for themselves, and it's much better to point to things that one has achieved in the real world then being proven 'right' on a internet forum

 

always said burns aint true world level billy had him over achieving imo , you did a great job with him billy it,s just his last three fights burns imo seemed complacent , got to comfy maybe with his surroundings to used of maybe being numero uno whilst in gym time i dont know its just how it as come across to me

Ricky's best days are behind him now he's on the decline.

 

I've took the **** in the past but that was more in jest than anything else and Billy always come back with some goodans and was up for a laugh.

In a nutshell.

Despite the controversy of the decision it was Nelsons guidance and motivation that got Ricky through the Beltran fight.

After all they have achieved, almost every fighter reaches a ceiling at some stage. A ceiling beyond which, no matter what work is done in camp, the fighter cannot go beyond, physically or mentally.

Nelson has coached, developed and motivated Burns to the fullest of his abilities. Ricky and Billy have covered themselves in glory but the truth is, despite his huge engine, incredible toughness and massive heart, Ricky has reached his optimum level for his particular skill set.

Fast Eddie has clearly voiced plans which make financial sense to Ricky at this stage in his career.

 

How could a US based trainer ever work for Burns if he is'nt planning to up sticks and move the family out to the US , i cant see that ever happening

 

Seems like Loyalty is not a Ricky Burns trait is it? Leaves FW after Frank had shown faith in him got Martinez at home for him and helped him win a world title when many promoters wouldn't have put up the money. Drops his trainer who has turned him from a decent fighter into a world champion as soon as he gets beaten by someone better than him. As the saying goes a poor workman blames his tools and IMO that is the case here Burns get's beaten by a much better fighter than him and thinks it's Billy's doing. If he has moved to Sims thats a dick move by both him and Hearn. Ricky needs to face facts Nelson has been a major part in making him world champion and regardless of if it was Billy or Sims or bloody Freddie Roach training him he still would have been schooled by Crawford and Beltran.

 

Not sure Josh Taylor's coach Terry McCormack would agree, Terry is a very good coach at both amateur and professional levels.

Same goes for Charlie Flynn's coach, Billy's old mentor Peter Harrison !!! Everybody knows what he has done

Billy I'm sure will do fine, John Simpson still has something to offer at Feather/Super Feather, he is training Ricky's old foe Andreas Evenson another good Feather and he also has his own project in David Brophy who has trained with billy since the start of his pro career. He'll pick up other fighters too with his reputation.

 

As much as it pains me to say it, your absolutely spot on.
Ricky's arse fell out in the Crawford fight, and he's clearly not man enough to blame himself.
Don't look back Billy, you did wonders with him, and i think your being wrongly blamed for Ricky's lack of form over the last few fights.

Billy took Ricky from being no more than a decent domestic contender to a world level SF and LW. After seeing Ricky easily beaten by Carl Johanneson I would never have thought that Ricky would go on to win 2 WBO belts. This wouldn't have happened if he hadn't moved to Billy.

The reason that Ricky has struggled so much in his last 3 fights in my opinion is that he has had to many fights go the distance and is probably done. The Burns that beat Martinez would have fared far better in his last 3 fights IMO.

 

Gutted for yourself Billy always great talking to you on here and you kept all us guys informed wih how things were going with camps and open workout times etc good luck with whoever you train in the future looking forward to seeing more Scots coming through.

As others have said a change of scenery might do Ricky some good I feel like in his last few fights he's been a bit complacent and too comfortable where he is and if you watch his SFW fights he comes back to the corner and listens to Billy but if you watch fights from after Mitchell he comes back trying to get his little say in the matter instead of listening to Billy's instructions so he needs someone who will make him listen again.

Not sure what skillwise he can change he will be 31 this year so it's not exactly early in his career where he could be taught new stuff the only thing I'd maybe like to see is a little more head movement.

 

Ive been told Burns has acted like a superstar since after the Mitchell fight and talks down to people regularly including Nelson, but Burns doing the dirty behind Nelsons back with Hearns he should hang his head in shame
