What overall grade do you give to the resume of James Toney?

Give it a grade, F being the lowest, A+ being the highest.

Remember, we are grading strictly his resume, not him as a fighter.

    His notable wins include:

    Michael Nunn
    Reggie Johnson
Mike McCallum - McCallum was 36, most people believe past prime.
Iran Barkley - in devastating fashion. Toney's best performance ever, IMO.
Vassily Jirov - underrated win IMO
Evander Holyfield - yes, Holyfield was past prime. Remember however, James was too, he is only 5-6 years younger. Also remember he was fighting at HW, WAAAAY past his best weight at Super Middle. Toney absolutely destroyed him in devastating fashion. Toney being way out of his best weight range deserves credit imo.
John Ruiz - Toney testing positive for steroids has put a huge stain on this win. Again Ruiz wasn't great, but it was for a legitimate title, and Ruiz did have wins over Holyfield and Golota.

Those are not all of his notable wins, but the majority.

Michael Nunn is obviously a great win, he was in his prime. Toney was losing the fight, but came back to knock him out, he showed a ton of toughness and determination. McCallum was definitely not prime, but still a very formidable opponent, this is a solid win. He did beat him again later, but that was 5 years later, McCallum had declined far more, don't consider the second win notable. Barkley and Jirov both solid, but not great wins, Toney gave his best performance ever against Barkley without a doubt in my mind. I think that Toney on that particular night beats many of the best fighters ever at that weight, he was incredible that night. I rate the Holyfield win higher than most, because Toney was only 5 years younger, and won in dominating fashion, knocking out Holyfield. I do factor in the fact Toney had no business being at HW and still won, and give him more credit than most for that. The Ruiz fight I can't excuse Toney using steroids, but I think even that shot version of Toney beats any version of Ruiz, steroids or not.

Overall I think Toney has a solid resume, but not great.

    Final Grade: B

    I love Toney.

Tim Littles? That win has got to be up there.

Do you think he has enough elite wins to be put there? Remember C is average, B is already a very high rating, being that you're only one letter from the best resumes.

Vintage Toney was amazing, especially considering he never was a truly dedicated fighter, he never trained like some of the other guys did. I seriously wonder what a Toney with a work ethic of a Bernard Hopkins could have achieved? He had some of the greatest in fighting ever seen, his defense there was awe inspiring. He had much better power than most give him credit for too, he could put guys with formidable chins on their asses when he wanted to. Toney's chin was amazing too, he had it all, except the work ethic.

Tim Littles is certainly a good win too, no doubt. I made sure to put "his notable wins include" so people didn't think I was listing every one of them. I more or less just jotted down the ones that came to mind immediately, I was trying not to make my original post into an essay :p He also stopped Charles Williams, who was an IBF champ at Light Heavy.

Very good resume that could have been much better had he not wasted so many years where he didnt take the sport as serious as he should and didnt train as hard as he should. Better resume than Duckweather thats for god damn sure.

oo bad Toney didn't get a chance to dance with them Klit sisters. At the time he was calling them out I think he could have beaten them or at least been one of their toughest fights.

    Don't be such a fool.
The Klits best live opponent is Sam Peters.
Peters didn't come close to killing Toney in their 2 fights.

    A

James Toney is an old-school fighter with an old-school resume. Fight the best, win some, lose some. And Toney did not only fight all the best, he also fought just about everybody else that was out there.

Really, Toney has fought everybody of any relevance in all the weight classes that he competed at, with the exception of the Klitschkos at HW (who he has called out many times though).

And here some cold stats: James has 16 champions on his resume, half of whom would go on to win one or more major titles AFTER they had faced Toney. Who else has done that in modern times?

Solid B+ or A-, would of been A+ had he fought and beaten Benn and Eubank, his biggest threats at SMW at the time
