Hi I'm a novice amatuer I started boxing very late at 28 years old but I have have it my all so far training like I'm a pro lol

Iv only had three fights since I started in October(won 2 lost1 both points) but recently iv had to pull out of a few fights due to the index knuckle on my lead hand. It's been getting worse and worse till the point where I can't throw a jab without getting a sharp pain right through my hand. I left it alone for 1 week it felt better started punching the bags n pads again and it instantly hurt. So left it for 2.5 weeks started bk again and it went on me again!

The hospital were not much use just said basically rest it stop punching anything at all!! Said its either cartlidge or ligament damage so needs 6 weeks rest. I spoke to a sports physio who was more helpful he understood this is something I need help with he gave me a piece of foam/tape that was shaped like a small donut told me to tape it around the knuckle then put my wraps on over it?

Anyone else used anything like this before?

Iv not fully tried it out yet as I want to really leave it for a good 3/4 weeks before I even think about hitting the pads or bags.

Anyone else got any ideas on how to prevent this type of injury?

Thanks in advance for any ideas I'm pissed off with it I really wanted to have at least 10 fights in my first season then go into the 10 fights or under novice championships start of next season but with this injury it's looking like ill be going into the championships with 3 or 4 fights instead!!

What size gloves do you use on the bags and pads?

a great street fighter i know of, use to do press ups on his knuckles on concrete to toughen up his knuckles. he knocked out lots and lots of people his hes also a boxing trainer.

not sure how well it works as i dont really do knuckle push ups on concrete.

You might be wrapping your hands too wide. Meaning...you try to wrap across your palm and around your knuckles to the point that you are unable to close your fist.

Most would agree at 28 you are too old to start a boxing career

Record of 2 - 1 (0 KO) indicates that you are a pillow puncher and also not very good with a 33.33333% loss ratio

The bad hands, well that tops it off.

My advice? Quit now, before u get hurt :deal

I normally used 16 for bags and pads with no pain at all and in the last 6 months or so ive switched to 12s and have started to have painful knuckles, so maybe the lighter gloves could be the issue. I am personally going to switch back to 16s

By the sounds of it I had pretty much the same injury.

I did mine on October 31st and it's only just healed now.

Thanks for the advice mate...I had already planned on scrapping the 10's when I can start to get back punching again. Doing everything with 16's from now on!!

Sounds exactly the same! Nightmare and its only feeling better now!? I'm hoping to get at least one fight in by the end of the season ill be truly gutted if I have to wait months before I can punch again!!

Someone else suggested staying away from bag work n pads for a while even get back sparring just avoid heavy bag n pads until I know for a fact it's back stronger

sounds like your lead hand is delivering the index knuckle first then the three others
