Was Calzaghe's dispatching of Jeffrey Lacy one of the greatest/best wins of this era?

While the Lacy win was a very good win at the time, especially the manner of the win in reality it's not even Calzaghe's best victory.

Hopkins win over Tito was a greater win as was his win over Tarver. Marquez's KO of Pac was a better win, Roy Jones Jr's win over Ruiz was a better win, in fact I doubt Calzaghe's win over Lacy is even in the top 10 wins of this era.

I think it was arguably a careers best performance in some aspects, but best achievement was Kessler, as he was top draw at the time. Joe was best in and around his weight class, and yes he would have beat prime Hopkins and Jones (drug cheat don't forget), least Calzaghe waited to he was retired until he took the drugs

    Yes.

There are 100s of posters here who still struggle to deal with it to this day.

His win over Kessler was better than the Lacy one but what is this thread about ?

How many times is the Lacy fight brought up ?

Again to his fans it's comes off as his biggest accomplishment!

Yet the only thing that keeps coming up is the Lacy fight like it was his career defining fight !Oh no remember that most people didn't know who Joe was on the other side of the pond until he beat Lacy ??Funny after all those fights that became his coming out party..

Hopkins win over Pavlik was better than this one over Lacy.

What's wrong with that after how many fights that's his career defining fight

The super middle weight division had been around for yrs beating a hype train shouldn't have been the fight for people to have taken notice if he was actually as good as his fans make him out to be ..Most US fans knew who Benn was Eubank was and even Froch,it's because they didn't wait around all there best yrs to make people notice them by padding their records !

lots of people around the world took notice of Joe, including the Americans. they showed lots of his fights on Showtime. it's no one's fault if the Yanks don't take much notice when they haven't got a dog in the fight they think is going to win. that's just your glory hunter nature. and if the fight isn't in America most of the time, they don't care to watch. ignorance isn't a good quality to have you know... other boxing fans around the world don't have this problem. they watch international fights.

but when Lacy came along, they truly believed he was going to destroy Calzaghe. so they paid the fight a whole lot more attention than they usually did because they thought he was on the winning side, not the losing side that the Yanks had been on before this fight.

but Lacy got spanked, just like the rest of the Yanks. so we were seeing nothing new. :hey

hes telling you that Americans noticed Eubank and Froch but not Calzaghe. Therefore your argument that Yanks ignore them is redundant - they ignore those who don't do anything and notice those who do. - THATS the distinction that the Imp has made.

You've interpreted it as something entirely different, so as to shoehorn your irrelevant answer to his point when his point has nothing to do with your irrelevant answer.

Do you think Whitaker is a ATG? If so, then so is Calzaghe.

It was a good, probably even great performance, I think everyone agrees on that.

And I know this is a troll thread (again, I think everyone agrees on that as well).

The question is: does Lacy rank high enough to lend the fight that kind of credence? Surely "one of the greatest wins of the era" must be against a really high caliber opponent.

Lacy was the favorite, and Lacy had a good amateur career. But he was a green professional (despite being a champion). Media hype doesn't equal greatness, and that's why I don't think this can be labeled as one of the best wins of the era. This wasn't the first time an underdog beat the favorite, it doesn't make sense that this fight is given such godlike proportions by the pro-Joe-fan-club.

Good/great performance by Joe, and that should be good enough.

Calzaghe is the GOAT. He beat Sheika, Lacy, and Manfredo in their primes.
