I was taller than my parents my sons are taller than me so It just happens unless your father marries a midget
ok...those of you who say he'd be so much heavier.....can you please explain it to me like i'm a six year old....why would he be heavier ?...and how would he be better being heavier (taking him as being the same height).
Two questions there. 1. A modern trainer would have him lifting weight to increase muscle mass, and probably using steroids as well. Today anybody from light heavyweight upwards can fill out to 210lbs. 2. It is by no means certain that he would be better, but if it was done right, it might theoreticaly give him more strength to counteract the physical advantages of bigger heavyweights. Part if the reason he came in so light in his own era, is because it was an era of slicksters.
The heavyweight division is ruined today. Each and every fighter should be 25lb lighter and be 25% better but nobody wants to chance it because the 25lb weight disadvantage would be a factor. It's only one factor but still nobody will chance it. The best heavyweights are bigger than they need to be. All those old school trainers have been bypassed for conditioners who can get more out of a fighter physically but not technically. A balance between the two has been overlooked and lost. For ever. In the 1960s Whitney bimsteen was still around. 1980s arcel, Dundee, Futch were still around. After that there was no overlap just passed down protege's and conditioners. Manny Stewart is also gone. Marciano today would be bigger and he would not be fighting men as good as he met. That's about the shortest answer I can give. But I will argue all day over why he would still be a great fighter.
Marciano did not have the frame to carry more weight and be effective. Holyfield could do it because he had longer limbs, a 6-2 with a 78" reach. Spinks likewise was 6-2 with a 76" reach... With his stubby limbs, narrow shoulders and 5-11 height, Marciano would resemble a bowling ball at 210. And to the notion that he would suddenly be 3 inches taller. The reasons folks have gained a little in height over the last 50 years are better nutrition and better early childhood health care. I have read two Marciano bio's and don't recall any mention of his family starving. Rather, he had a whale for a mother who cooked all the time. Marciano was actually a giant for southern Italian stock. I travel there about once a year on business. I am a damn giant there. Were he around today, Marciano would be King of Cruisers, no doubt. He was a great fighting machine.
This is an atrocious post. The idea that Wladimir Klitschko should be coming in at 215 or that Steven Cunningham should be coming in at 180 is ludicrous. The notion that this would make them better is beyond bizarre.
The super heavyweight era, is actually a small number of fighters such as Lewis and Wlad. The current crop of heavyweights, are for the most part not big, but bulked up or poorly conditioned. There are light heavyweight penetrating the division, now as ever!
In your opinion. Think about it. It's not so much the weight in itself it is the type of training, the type of sparring, the type of fighters top fighters sparred with, the gyms, the fight towns, fight circuits and the best men that system produced. To train the way that allowed a man to be competitive in those days allowed for a man to weigh less. Championships were over 15 rounds. Competition was red hot. More fighters etc etc etc. Would Joe Louis be as good today? No. He would not meet Jack Blackburn and develop into the fighter he needed to be to suit the time he fought in. But he would still be great now. He would be heavier, he would train like they do now but the competition, the pace and all that would be different. Same with Marciano. Both fighters would be great now though because they were exceptional men. There is always an exception for an exceptional fighter. there is an exceptions for every rule.
No. In almost everyone's opinion. If you started a poll asking if Wlad would be a better fighter if he weighed 216lbs for the Povetkin fight you would be laughed off the forum. If you produce a 6'6 fight with 216lbs on his frame, you have failed him utterly. Whatever training you are doing is a joke. You've made a ludicrous post with no redeeming features.
As a child, he weighed around 10lbs. As a mature adult he weighed over 230lbs, consistently, and in his prime as a boxer he weighed around 250lbs.
But if povetkin also came in at 210, a weight he would have been closer to under old school training it would be a better fight to watch. And you know it. There are only a handfull of great natural superheavyweights. There is nothing ludicrous about a 6'6 man weighing 216 under an old time training programme. How much did wlad weigh as an amateur? I'm thinking 226lb would give him more pace and options. I'm not sure where 216 comes from? Maybe you are the ludicrous one?
I dont know about useless but i think i agree with this concept. First, under modern training, he will have been taught about the importance of size and power as opposed to being taught about the importance of Stamina and condition. this means that his legendary training would have focussed more on strength training than conditioning. I think he looks like a David Tua type. Blowing up to 240 or 250 with good power. Also consider, that modern thinking, would almost certainly have him doubling up on the Jab more, and with his reach, this is very, very bad tactically. Although a modern rocky would hit a lot harder, like most others of this time, he would also huff and puff after the third or fourth round. This is bad news for Rocky, with his style. I cant see how he could get into slugging contests and rely on pure heart against today's behemoths. Like Tua, i see him with some impressive KOs, and who knows, maybe he would KO a klitchsko, but before long someone is going to take advantage of the lack of conditioning, and land a big shot on a tired opponent. I think he would be know more than a solid opponent. Going back against the Ezzard, Walcott and possibly even louis (imagine Joe if Marciano jabbed more instead of crowding him) would have all worn him down and KOd him. With Rocky's style, you need to be in 110 percent shape and need to be able to through them down all round. think guys like Dempsey, Frazier and even Tua. Once they lost their conditioning they lost their edge in fights.
