Overrated to me. He was very lucky against Lewis, he was getting bombed out for 5 rounds until he connected and in the rematch he got bombed out and put to sleep in 4. He was outboxed by John Ruiz. Maskaev owned him twice. Old Holyfield clearly beat him. His best win is Corrie Sanders and his best performance is Tua. I cant remember how he did against Toney.
He beat Sanders, something Wlad wasn't good enough to do and when faced with an out of shape, unmotivated Lewis, knocked him out, something Vitali wasn't good enough to do.
I always felt Rahman got a bit underrated. I see more comments about him being a one hit wonder, a guy who got lucky once, or a journeyman who happened to knock Lewis out than I do comments praising him. He was inconsistant and would come in less than the best of shapes at times but he had huge power and a very good jab. The win over Lewis is one of the better wins in heavyweight history but he beat a number of solid to good heavyweights beside Lewis. Sanders was a very good win that looks better after Sanders upset Wlad. Barrett, Sullivan, and Meehan were nice wins as well. He had draws with Tua and Toney and I think he won both of those fights especially the Tua rematch.
He didn't get lucky versus Lewis. He used the jab over and over right before the right hand. Blame Lewis for not training. The Ruiz fight was close from what I recall, but he did lose. He wasn't shutout or anything. Maskaev was actually getting owned, twice, before landing the KO blows. Holy was beating him, yes, but I had Rahman winning 2-3 rounds before the headbutt stoppage. I thought if Rahman got him into the late rounds, he could have taken over on stamina and maybe gotten the late TKO. Holyfield has **** stamina at that point of his career. Rahman definitely beat Toney in the first fight, but struggled in the rematch.
Rahman had a Glass Jaw. Only thing he ever did was KO Lennox who also didn't have the best Chin. Shortest chamionship reign of any heavyweight besides Leon Spinks.
Huh? Best HW of the past decade? He was shot for most of the past decade, get real. He was one of the 4 or 5 best HW's from 2000-2006, which is a big compliment. But don't get carried away.
Rahman was a decent contender who put it together one night against an off-form great in Lewis. While it was far from a dominant performance, he did have some success with the jab and landed a nice overhand right about 30 seconds before the shot that took Lewis out. Rahman's had heavy-ish hands and was strong. His jab was probably the only thing which I saw and was really that impressed by. His punch resistance and stamina weren't very good, and his balance often hurt him when he tried to throw combos. I do find it rather amusing though how often Corrie Sanders gets praised as this really good fighter who would've done so more if given the chance, and if he took boxing more seriously. Yet Rahman is always bashed and people act like he sucked. What happened when they fought?
Rahman was not ahead on the cards, but the cards were WAY out of line. 6-1 for Holy on 2 on the cards? BS. But, I still maintain that had the fight gone DEEP, Rahman would have prevailed. Rahman won at least 2 rounds. 3 if you gave him a close round 1. He landed some serious leather on Holy. People never talk about that scrap, but it was a GREAT fight by heavyweight standards.
Anyone see the pic of Rahman on the Super 8 page? He looks lighter than he did for Povetkin, and the tournament is 7 weeks away. Maybe he's taking this seriously?
