Duran doesn't have the wins to be top 15 even. Against who? Beating Ray? Like someone said yesterday, Ray was still inexperienced and he still went 15 fighting Duran on the inside. Which was stupid. No one is going to knockout Duran except a guy with the firepower and speed of Tommy Hearns. Hearns at welterweight would have done the same thing to Duran as he did at 154. Just too fast and too much leverage or Duran. Duran had no answer for Hearns right hand, and that might have also been trouble with Arguello. who also had a right hand.

Ray had already run half of a pretty good 147 division by that point (Hearns ran the other half). He hadn't peaked, but was still an extremely good fighter when he stepped into the ring in Montreal.

Plus Duran beat Marcel (very underrated), Buchanan, DeJesus x2 and cleaned out a solid lightweight division before moving up. Pretty damned good work, dude.

Marcel is going to get Duran top 10 atg without his post lightweight stuff? Cleaning out a solid lightweight division is not really proof of anything. Tyson cleaned out the heavyweights better than Duran and with more established guys I think, and Mike is nowhere near top 10 all timer. Ray in June of 1980? Still had not fought and learned what he did later with Hearns. With Hearns in 81 he was at his peak as far as best he ever would fight.

Marcel is arguably a Top 20 all time featherweight. Buchanan and DeJesus are both Top 20 at lightweight. He beat a Top 5 at welterweight (and schooled Palomino before that), and then after enduring an up and down spell at jr. middle (where he still managed to win a belt), came back to run a top 5 middleweight very close and then win a belt at 160 when everyone said he was done.

Plus, in his prime, at his very best (Dejesus III-Leonard 1) I find it hard to think of ten guys who were better, in terms of the eye test. Hell of a fighter, at his very, very best.

who were the all time greats he beat? Dejesus? Where does Cervantes rank? Benitez? Even with your top 20 with Marcel and Buchanan, how does that make Duran all time top 10? If you are top 10 all time great, you would have to beat other all time great fighters and he did not. Buchanan and Dejesus were not all time greats. The math does not work out. And he did not almost beat Marvin Hagler. A year before that he lost easily to Benitez and right after Hagler wiped out by Hearns. What gets him the top fighter ever rating or near it? Leonard? A little easier. beat all time greats Benitez,Hearns,Duran,Hagler. Clear cut right there.

Duran beat Leonard. Where do you rank Leonard? The man ruled lw for 6 1/2 years. His impressive showing even in losses past his prime elevate Duran. Winning the mw title is the icing on the cake. Hands Of Stone.

at the time Duran beat Ray, I wouldnt rank him as a great fighter. Ray became a great fighter. I rank Ray about 8 all time great because he beat Benitez,Duran,Hearns, Hagler. Something Duran never came close to. That is a great record and resume. Ray did something Duran,Hearns or Hagler could not do. Beat them all.

All the hacks & all the scribes from back in the day unanimously applied the sobriquet of the 'GREAT' to the handle of DURAN who was universally acclaimed and lorded as the greatest lightweight champion of the modern era.....And along came a keyboard warrior & revisionist expert like you who disagrees:lol:.....you are a joke:deal

All your ****** spew on here is just a plagiarized version of the loopy spew that MAG1965 used to belch up, it's near on word for word identical & equally nonsensical, Duran dominates a division for the best part of a decade & a muppet like you ain't impressed. YDKSAB.....what a wanker:yep

Just an opinion. This is how it is with Duran and the fab 4. Duran was the greatest and the fab 4 was the greatest era. Why? Other eras had superfights but it is as tho they donnt exist when compared to the mighter fab 4. Look they were great fighters, but all of them had weakness. The one I think had the least flaws in my opinion is the one who won all the fights. Sugar Ray. I remember mag but he was a hearns admirer, and I do like Hearns I also see that he was flawed like all the fab 4. Again overrated. Duran overrated and fab 4 overrated. A little. Seems like when I say Duran and his fab 4 buddies were a little overrated people get insulted as tho this is no opinions on here.

it is true I was not around as much then. I like this site more now than then. But the people who went to checkhook went there because they couldn't handle it or were banned. either way this site is quieter now.
