Apparently Flynn knocked him out only 10 seconds into the round and Dempsey laid there for 20 seconds after. This was only about two years prior to Dempsey winning the title, and with 30 pro bouts behind him..

What is seldom reported is Dempsey's own brother threw in the towel. Its a legit KO. I have seen some claim it was a dive.

How do we know if it was legit or a dive?
Some said it was a fix. Dempsey denied that. The truth is lost to history.

I put it in the “reasonable suspicion” category myself.

Most of the evidence points to it being on the level, but there is enough negative evidence to put a question mark over it.

Exactly :deal. Are people really that silly to not be able to work it out for themselves?? It makes me laugh  yeah I'm really sure Flynn is gonna KO Dempsey in 10 seconds come people let's get our brains in gear on this? It boggles the mind that it's taken a release of FBI documents 50years later to convince people of the blatantly obvious fixes that were the Clay-Liston bouts?? I don't get it? If equivalent things occurred these days people would tell blatantly! Actually hold on minute no they wouldn't the vast majority don't even know building 7 existed? Put it down to stone cold apathy

There is absolutely NO EVIDENCE that this was fixed other than what a couple of people close to Dempsey said years later. If you cut out people who wanted to make Dempsey look like he couldnt possibly lose to a journeyman talking years later then there is no evidence whatsoever that he threw this fight. Chalk this up to a pre prime guy getting stopped by a faded warhorse. It happens with regularity. Lets also not forget that Dempsey, who owned the early rounds of his fights, was outboxed by Willie Meehan in four rounders. If ever a fighter was made for 4 rounders it was Dempsey but some want to believe these were abherations. Maybe, but Dempsey simply wasnt prime yet.

Wait, so how do you read those files and equate them with proof of a fix?

Liston-Clay and Ali-Liston fights were filmed. Don't need any FBI files.

Man, there used to be a great thread on this floating around, anyone remember? OLD FOGEY put the work in there.

People believe what they want to believe where this one is concerned, and will forever more.

Only those who with a vested emotional or financial interest in Dempsey uphold this result as anything but on the level. The lesson to be learned is don't come between someone and their preferred narrative.

Did the Fireman get a rightful victory?

I don't think anyone here is in a position to uphold the result one way or the other. No one here knows.

Dempsey's own "preferred narrative" was to say the fight was on the level. He also denied he knew his first wife was a prostitute until after they were married,, never mind being her pimp, and busting her in the jaw. He denied all accusations that he made any effort whatsoever to avoid going to war. He did well to re-invent and portray himself as a gentleman, but he was full of ****. I wouldn't put it past any of those guys to dump a fight for a few extra dollars, they weren't model citizens, and times were hard.
