The Ali-Frazier trilogy: The revisionist version I hear repeated constantly is that Ali lost in '71 because of ring rust from the layoff, but then he got back to his old self and avenged the loss. In reality the Thrilla in Manilla was more a result of Frazier's decline than anything Ali did. Anyone who actually watches the fights can see that Ali had faded significantly by '75. He certainly hadn't returned to his old form at any rate. Frazier simply faded quicker/more drastically due to his style and the wars he had been in.

Like I said, JoeCal gets full credit for his dominate win and proving his many critics wrong who questioned his skill based on his shaky resume. But the continued post-fight hyping of Lacy as America's most loved 'next big thing' is way off from his actual standing in the US boxing hierarchy at the time.

 

Damn...you seem to be remembering incorrectly in this post. Judah landed the better shots early in the first few rounds...that is indeed true. But the second half of that fight, Judah was on his wait to gettin' STOPPED. Taking tons of un-answered shots being both beaten and bloodied. Then all that **** happened and all people seem to remember his Judah looking great.

This was the one I wanted to say, I couldn't think of it. Even Cooper till the day he died brought up the extra time Ali had as if it was anywhere NEAR "minutes". It wasn't even noticeable

 

Honestly the best one that comes to mind was Ali - Cooper, but someone already said it.

Once I read the thread topic, a whole bunch of ideas flew through my head, and I couldn't really pinpoint a single one specifically. I'm sure most people know the feeling...

I do know that most of them are old fights, and "Boxing Historian" Bert Sugar used to do it all the time...

I mean hell, anyone really watch in detail how Broner - Maidana really went. People remember a thorough ass whooping (which it technically was) but few people actually want to acknowledge any of what Broner did (which included ending the fight the fresher fighter)

But thats exactly what i said in my post . I said Zab had no answer for Floyd in the second half of the fight and Floyd adapted and completely took over .

I keep reading on this web site that Hopkins was robbed or that it was a close fight that could have gone either way. BUNK! Calzaghe won the fight 117-112. Sure Hopkins knocked him down, but the fight was not even closeatsch

 

Agree with this sentiment, Khan lost to Diaz IMO, pitter-pat replies and good circling don't over-shadow the, perhaps, 50 or so massive right hand counters he seem to be shipping every minute of the fight.*

Having said that, I can't see how people give Peterson the win in their battle. Great inside work and gretaer technical skill from Amir and he loses the fight for bloody "pushing"??? How about Foreman V Frazier 1 for "pushing"! Not even a hint of "take a point off Foreman" from ANYONE.

*Reads weird, 50 or so right counters over the course of the 12 is what is meant, but delivered consistently in all rounds

Too true, great performance from Joe, out-classed Lacy altogether, however, the odds at the time reflect that a points victory for Joe wasn't exactly 'unlikely':
Calzaghe 11/8, Lacy 4/5, draw 37/1 at Betfair.

 

Byrd Vitali - Byrd made Vitali quit by making him miss all night long. In reality Vitali was controlling the fight, winning nearly every round until 9th when the injury occured.

Holyfield - Lewis II - Lewis winning clearly and settling the previous injustice straight, in reality an extremly close disputable fight that could have gone either way.

Mayweather - DLH. Clear win for Mayweather from beggining to end. In reality DLH was winning the fight after round 9 and lost a razor sharp decision winning the last 3 rounds.

Mayweather - Hatton. Dominant performance by Mayweather as usual. In reality even fight after 6 rounds before Mayweather took over.

 

I agree LOJ, Broner went up definitely in my estimation (including the woeful but post-knockdown play-acting from the head-butt) since he showed some real grit and kept his belief and fire-power till the end. Maidana just wouldn't be denied that night though. Good fight, no one-sided beat down at all.

I'll add the controversial Benn V McClellan fight. Some would say this is Benn's greatest performance but I think Gerald would have schooled him had he not been acting weird and off-point because of fighting with the debilitating brain injury. Benn beat people who performed better overall.

 

When did Cotto almost get stopped in the second fight with Margo?

He won just about every round and turned Margo into a cyclops; and even in the final round was still landing the better shots.
