The Toney fight aside he never pushed himself and now it's too late. Had he fought some of Nunn, Collins, Eubank, G Man, DM, young Calzaghe, Hopkins and Toney rematches he would have had a legitimate claim to be the GOAT. After all, his fans claim he would have won all these matches at a canter. Yet what we got was the likes of Byrd, Pazienza and Thornton.
It's easy to say that, but half of those fights weren't viable. It's also to say that we got the likes of Byrd Paz and Thornton. Yes, but what about the others?
And the way Roy wiped the floor with him, was a big part of the reason most had Roy at #1 for the next 10 years.
Roy for whatever reason didn't push himself and avoided challenges. I think this much is clear. Does this make his Legacy harder to judge? Certainly. As I say he had the potential to be considered the GOAT which is high praise. I know your a big fan Loudon and that's cool but you have to see why for many Roy's career is one sad what might have been which considering what he achieved is amazing. Then there is the whole PED issue but I can do without opening that can of worms
People have a funny way of saying people avoided other people without any damn proof lol Just becuz they don't fight who u idiots want them to fight doesn't mean there was any avoiding. Understand boxing politics Reminds me of these idiots who used to say for the longest that Floyd "avoided" Cotto lmaoo
Those IBF super-middleweight defenses were just atrocious. Byrd was mandatory but fighting post-severe neck surgery blown-up lightweight Pazienza instead of Michael Nunn and post-retirement, post-severe shoulder surgery Thornton instead of Tim Littles was diabolic.
Its funny how everyone assumes that everyone Jones didnt fight were falling over themselves to fight him. The fact that those fights didnt happen, for some magical reason ALWAYS falls on Roy and not the other guy. Eubank straight up, didnt want to fight him. Benn was stuck with King and all the political nonsense that involves. DM didnt want to go to America and Jones had no interest in going there. Jones team DID try to make a fight with DM in America. Collins legit wanted the fight, but it never happened for whatever reason. The reason definitely isnt anything to do with Jones being scared. One of Jones more under-rated wins was completely shutting Reggie Johnson out for the IBF title. Johnson held a win over Collins. It just doesnt make a whole lot of sense that he'd be afraid of Collins. He tried making the Hopkins match (60/40) but Hopkins didnt want to accept the lesser split even though Jones was a bigger name, had a win over Hopkins and it was Hopkins that was coming up in weight. What would have beating Toney again have proved? Toney barely won a round of the first fight.
Just when I thought Steve Bunce couldnt be more full of ****... "The Americans wanted no part of him", give it a break Steve.. Chris Eubank wrote in his auto-biography that he didnt want to fight Jones while he was still in his prime. He only called out Jones after Collins had beaten him a couple of times and wanted a retirement fight. Theres your "bravest man"
