Someone Im curious about. If He hadnt seriously injured His Rotator Cuff, early in his career, how good could He have been. Its amazing the Fights He was in with this handicap. They never really are 100% again, what He achieved was remarkable. Whats your thoughts.
Good fighter if not great. Two great fighst against embank but lets be honest eubank was no cruiserweight! Other than that obviously best known for his shock win over haye. Some great mentions in making haye book by elliott worsell about the thompson fight and its a shame they never had a rematch so that thompson could have had a big payday for his shock win which he deserved.
One of my favourite fighters, amazing powers of recovery and you could never count him out. One of the chaps on here who was trying to make it as a writer interviewed him a couple of years back, think it was in Boxing News. He had some great come from behind victories, his best asset was his ability to shake off the punishment and dredge up a fight-ending punch. Not quite a world class fighter in my opinion even though I'm a fan and he held a couple of titles, I'm not sure having the injury would have changed that he came late to boxing didn't he so was never a stylist...
Always liked watching him fight and he really could punch i was hoping he would ko nelson but no such luck
No,don't think so personally. Johnny was one of the best ever at cruiserweight, vastly underrated. But Carl was a really tough man. Saw his come from behind win over the South African. Most dramatic KO I ever saw. He was a deserving champion, and underrated himself. Didn't get the recognition he deserved. Nice man too,I think.
loads of bottle and as you say a really nice bloke.he has a boxing club near ours, he's still in good nick but nowhere near as big as I thought he was.
HIs knockout of Akim Tafer (30mins 50 secs) is absolutel quality .... to go to the frenchmans country and knock him out to defend his european strap was class http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQbZXs_5mZw
I have told the story once (or a thousand times) before, but I remember when the unbeaten Welsh bomber Nicky Piper was due to fight on 'Seconds Out'. His opponent pulled out, so on 24 (or less) hours notice a Journeyman Cruiserweight agreed to be fodder for Piper. (I think he was still Adrian, it was that long ago) Carl Thompson, coming off a defeat or two began to show the qualities needed to become a world title holder that night, brutally taking Piper's '0'.
He was totally solid. If you can find it anywhere look for highlights of his fight against Ezra Sellers- great all action fight with some huge knockdowns
The punches that he knocks out Piper with  (8 mins 20) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ow2ggGr47X4
Massive puncher and good fighter, always gave his all. I cant think of a CW today with his power and think he would be right up there if prime today
