Roy was a 5'10, 34 year old LHW, who'd had 50 fights, and who'd started out at LMW/MW, who easily beat Ruiz. David Haye was a 6'3, 29 year old HW, who'd had 23 fights, and who struggled to beat Valuev. Also, Roy would probably have beaten Valuev without too much trouble.
Yes lets looks at the circumstances: Calzaghe was fighting a guy with skills and that could punch and was a unified champion and unbeaten. Jones was fighting a guy that wasn't even allowed to clinch in a Heavyweight fight which happens all the time and was his ONLY weapon. Lets not forget that Ruiz was flatfooted, slow as molasses, had no power or Ring generalship and was tailor made for Glass Jaw Roy hence why he picked him and not any of the other beltholders. :rofl And, it is also why it was a one and done fight at Heavyweight for Roy.
The type of fighters RJJ and his management picked seems to reflect on his in ring style too, very evasive.
It is called Heavyweight for a reason. You keep talking about 'size' but History has shown us it doesn't matter as much as you say it does. I can't fathom why you are whining about Roy moving to Heavyweight and being 'small'. He fought John Ruiz. A guy that had virtually no skill set what so ever. He didn't slay Godzilla. It was a handpicked circus type fight. If he wanted to make History he would have fought Lennox Lewis. He didn't.
He still made history..... You have been on here posting for years that he didin't make history, but you can't change it... World Champ at MW-SMW-LHW-HW then LHW again = Making history.. Deal with it hater.
Rico, In Roy's case, fighting the man at HW was possibly the greatest H2H fighter of all time at HW, and he was a giant, Roy was a small LHW. That was not the case for Fitz or Spinks. Circumstances matter. Roy would have actually outweighed Corbett on fight night... And I give him a very good chance against the version of Holmes that Spinks beat.
He was nothing but a beltholder at MW-SMW-LHW-HW. He didn't make history. In order to do that he had to fight Lennox Lewis. Because of his reluctance and handpicking he was arguably never THE champion in any weight class he fought in. His whole career was smoke and mirrors.
Yeah and Jess Willard had almost 6" and 50 pounds on Jack Dempsey. Marciano was almost always the smaller guy. Tyson was almost always the smaller guy. Frazier was almost always the smaller guy. Holyfield was almost always the smaller guy. Get out of here with your bull**** excuses. Roy didn't make History. He wanted to make people think he did by deceit but real scholars of Boxing know what he did. And that was handpick the weakest of the bunch and then say he "made history" :roflatsch
And I think he was the man at LHW when he unified, and beat better opposition while DM cried and hid out.... But I think there is basically no case where he wasn't the man at LHW after beating Tarver.
He was a trinket beltholder when he unified at LHW. There was already an existing Lineal champion who also happened to be the rightful owner of two of Roy's trinkets (WBA,IBF) that he paraded around with. Maybe an argument can be made after he came back and beat Tarver. But that would be the ONLY time he was ever THE champion of any division he fought in and that was for what? 6 months total?
