A question here is could Tony Ayala have competed with the fab 4 and the 5th guy Benitez? I don't think so, but it is worth a question since he was going to get a title fight against Davey Moore in 1983. How would he have done vs. Hagler,Hearns,Duran,Leonard and Benitez.

Usually, Bully type guys like Liston, Tyson and Duran, even when they are great fighters, meet their matches at the highest level.

I'm not the least bit convinced he'd have beaten Moore, let alone those others.

There's only so much credit one should accord a fighter when his best opposition has been Jerry Cheatham and Robbie Epps. He was a prospect, nothing more.

I'd say Carlos Herrera was the best fighter the chubby ****** beat.Decent fighter that gave maurice hope a hard title fight.

Not that it changes your point though sal.

I'll always remember Ayala's warmth and grace, his polish and refinement, his kindness and zen state of spirituality. He was Sanchez's equal for young talents not come to fruition. He may have been the next big thing and yet had certainly accomplished more than enough to suggest he was a truly great fighter worth talking about on a personal and professional level for decades to come.

With Benitez in the group? HELL YES!

He wouldve also whipped Duran in 1982 had the match come off. thank the stars it didnt come off for Duran's sake. I thought he was insane for even wanting the match and I dont give a DAMN what Lora says on the subject. he just doesnt know enough about these matters and lets his bias cloud his judgement

I like youth, and strength over experience, which by the way played a huge factor in the Norris -srl bout

I always wonder what precisely a 'bully mentality' is? I mean the biggest bully I've ever seen in boxing was probably Muhammad Ali and he was both successful at the highest level and capable of gutting out a win.

    It's kind of vague, isn't it ?
...... but I think we can be fairly sure violent sadistic scum like Ayala have one.

Blimey an Ayala thread I thought these days had long gone

Short answer no he is probably a fighter who is to highly thought of by some purely because he got sent to jail before he got his arse beaten in the ring . I agree I am not convinced at all he would of beaten davey Moore .

I sort of disaagree with that. I think the 1982 champion Benitez at 154 easily outboxes Ayala, and Duran? Duran would have no trouble with Ayala. I think it would be another situation where Duran would have a guy right in front of him to showcase what Duran does best, work guys on the inside and avoid Ayala;s punches and then knock them out. Ayala is not the kind of fighter who beats Duran. This is Duran's best style to fight. Look at Barkley. Talk about Duran looking great in a fight. Ayala would have been another highlight film for him.

To the question being asked...yes, Tony, given his youth, power and ferocity, would've easily beaten Duran, Benitez, Moore and probably Hearns (given Tommy's suspect chin and stamina). I could only favor Hagler over young Tony.
