"I hope international amateur boxing's ruling body will be kind to me and that I will have enough health and motivation to perform at the Olympics in two years time,"

I must say, this is a pretty curious stance by Wlad. Wlad already has a gold medal. What's the point of beating up on a bunch of kids for another one? For those that don't know, there will be no more headgear for olympic boxing and they will have a pro style scoring system.

It will be a real shame if they allow pro boxers to compete in the olympics. The Olympics are the biggest and best platform for an amatuer fighter to kickstart their professional career. Imagine if someone like an Anthony Joshua had to fight Wlad with no head gear in the olympics. He would've been a ruined figher. Who knows how different Wlad's career would've turned out if he had to fight Lennox Lewis in what would've basically a pro fight in 1996.

Let's hope they do the right thing and keep Olympic boxing as an amateur sport for amateur athletes.

    What a complete joke.

He is basically saying his own Professional era sucks and now he wants to go against even more inexperienced and over-matched guys in the amateurs.

Having been an amateur himself and having used the Olympics as a springboard to future success, Wlad should be speaking out about the idea of professionals going for the Olympics. He wouldn't have liked it if Lennox Lewis, Tyson or Holyfield could have competed in 1996.

The Olympics should remain amateur, end of story.

It's the regulatory bodies fault for making guys like Wlad eligible if it does happen that way, but imo pros should be against the idea. Esp since Wlad won his Gold medal when professionals weren't allowed I think it'd be hypocritical of him to go back and deny youngsters and amateurs the chance of winning their main competition, which only comes around every 4 years anyway.

He had his time. Why not let the kids coming up have theirs?

Well, some points to consider for the inclusion of professionals in the Olympics. Cuban and Russian "amateurs" who were in their late 20's and early 30's were basically pros themselves, so the idea that Wlad should let young kids have their time is somewhat hypocritical in this context. Also, in basically every other Olympic sport which has professional leagues (basketball, hockey, soccer, etc.) the professionals are allowed to compete, so why is boxing any different?

Certain countries can be taught a lesson about keeping their late 20s early 30s "amatuers" in Olympic after Olympic.

Amateur heavyweights might be better than the garbage competition he's beaten for 99% of his career. the other 1% is B-level

Good, maybe it can help dispel the notion that Olympic boxing is lower level than the garbageman, political, money driven professional game. He'll be fighting better competition than the likes of Leapai, that's for sure.

Why? He would've beaten the likes of Tyson or Holyfield as an amateur no doubt.

This would be just as much a disgrace as letting any other pros in the Olympics including basketball, hockey and any other sport. It degrades the spirit of amateur competition.

All those guys would have murdered Wlad in 1996.
