Ray was not experienced yet and fought Duran's fight, and Duran was not as little as people thought. And Ray then easily beat Duran in the rematch when he fought the right style. You have to move and get Duran out of his fight to win, and if you did that it sometimes was easier than people thought. Look up Leonard and Benitez. Hearns was just too fast and powerful when he fought Duran. Another fight is Cooney/Spinks, although I think Cooney was overrated a bit. He should have won that fight with his size and left hook.

You know there is a Classic subforum on here, right? :yep

There are lots of people with specialized interests on boxing from before the modern era. Plenty of us who dabble, and plenty more who live and breathe the old-time stuff.

    Whitaker vs Vasquez
Jones vs Ruiz, Ruiz maybe not great, but he was awkward and had some respectable wins

The saying is applied when said fighters are both prime or at the very least fighting at the top of their games.

Michael Spinks (little man) beat Larry Holmes (Big man)
Good win for Spinks, but certainly Holmes was not prime, he was 36 years old and reflexively deteriorating. The fight prior to Spinks many though he got gifted against Carl Williams.

My point is that there are probably alot of cases where a prime little man beat an aging big man.
Not many in history though where a great little man beats a great big man where both are prime.
