He was asked what his motivation was for continuing to get in the ring (with the implication that he doesn't need the money anymore). His response? Legacy. Interviewer: "Floyd, you talk about legacy, but wouldn't your legacy be better served if you actually fought Manny Pacquiao? ..." Floyd: "Umm, Umm [voice breaks] I just want to say that [pause] congratulations to Manny, I just want to say congratulations to Manny Pacquiao on his last fight..." "...Floyd Mayweather fights for Floyd Mayweather, and Floyd Mayweather company is Mayweather Promotions." :rofl
LOL. Floyd didn't skip a beat as the guy jokingly brought up Calzaghe as sarcasm. Floyd let me slide as if the guy siad something stupid, as he did in comparing Slappy-White to Floyd Mayweather.
The thing is, the guy actually made a very good point. Calzaghe has a perfect record, yet that does not make him the TBE... Floyd didn't get the irony.
Floyd gets it. He really is not that dumb. Mayweather is a student of the game and watches all the old school fights to understand that to be TBE you have to also have The Best Ever Opponent. Ali had Liston/Frazier/Foreman, SRL had Duran, Bowe had Holyfield, but Mayweather has, nobody. People thought that it might be hatton, but it wasn't. Then they thought it might be Canelo, but it wasn't. So, without his nemesis, Mayweather is lacking the opposition to become TBE. Perhaps his nemesis was Pacquiao. That we will probably never know.
I wasn't thinking he was dumb for not getting it, more like unable to see it through his delusion. But maybe you're right and he doesn't truly believe his words when he calls himself TBE etc. Maybe he just does it for show. However, in this interview he really does sound like he wants to be known as TBE when he retires but at the same time he dodges the question about fighting Pacquiao, who as you say would be his ideal legacy defining nemesis (even if they didn't fight prime vs prime).
Mayweather never had the balls to come to Britain and smash Hatton in his backyard, but Calzaghe, despite being shot to bits, despite moving up in weight, came to America and had his way with the best Yankland had to offer.
Mayweather was nervous because he knows any knowledgeable boxing fan knows Calzaghe 46-0 >>>>> Mayweather's 46-0
so calzaghe was shot to bits when two fighters with a combined age of about 83 weren't? Hopkins clearly wasn't shot, but if you want credibility you need to stop saying calzaghe was just because it puts him in a better light
