Mayweather vs. Maidana in jeopardy over glove controversy

"No fight," stated Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe, who moments ago just left a meeting with members of Team Maidana and representatives from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Evidently, a controversy over the gloves that WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana is wanting to use has placed Saturday's fight in jeopardy.

When both teams arrived to select their gloves, Team Mayweather was not pleased with the lack of padding in the Everlast gloves that Team Maidana wanted to use. After hours of back-and-forth conversations between Ellerbe, Robert Garcia, and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, the Commission ruled that the specific gloves that Maidana wanted to use were not acceptable, however, the actual brand and style would be allowed provided Maidana use a different pair.

That decision did not seem to sit too well with Ellerbe, who had no problem declaring that the fight would be off. Team Maidana abruptly packed their bags and left the room. It's unclear at this point what the status of the fight is.

But once Mayweather and his team found out there isn't enough padding, Floyd is being a primmadonna again and wants to prevent this fight from happening like he did against Pacquiao.

He told me that he objected to those Everlast MX gloves, based on the way the padding is distributed--there is less padding ont he knuckles than typical goves, he said-- and also objected to the fact that they didn't come shrink-wrapped, in a manner he is accustomed to when receiving virgin gloves."

 

the commission really needs to develop a protocol for gloves and their inspection. it's too easy to manipulate the gloves and how they're made. foam density....displacement of the padding. there are some many tricks that can be done.

floyd is aligned with grant who's gloves imo are very stiff and suspect....especially around the thumbs. gabriel rosado had complaints about ggg's gloves (grants) and everyone called him a cry baby. andy lee asked for chavez jr's gloves to be weighed and roach told him to go **** himself. now we have maidana with suspect gloves from everlast. it's no secret that the guy providing maidana with his gloves is a huge fan and part of the camp practically. these things ruin the sport. control the quality of the gloves. stop with this **** about letting guys wear what ever gloves they want and make everyone wear the same gloves so there's not controversy. it's that simple.
