When did you start watching boxing?

    --Published: July 12, 1988

MORE than a year ago, Donald Trump was basking on the dais at the Grand Hyatt Hotel during the announcement of the Spinks-Cooney fight in the Atlantic City Convention Center only a roll of the dice away from his Trump Plaza casino-hotel. When the speeches ended, Trump was approached by someone who knew the zillionaire during one of his few financial flops -the demise of the United States Football League.

''Welcome to boxing,'' Trump was told.

''Oh, I'm not in boxing,'' Trump said with that soft smile. ''We're just the host of the fight. We're not in boxing.''

''You're in boxing,'' Trump was told

Exactly. That's what many people tend to not do with Mayweather. They simply look at the undefeated record and fail to scrutinize it for its quality. I honestly think that the quality of Mayweather's resume started falling off when he moved up from LW. Before his JWW days, Floyd's resume was actually really good.

Losses almost always drop fighters in the divisional rankings for a reason...

Same applies when valuing a career. Losing isn't good. It doesn't overly matter as anything magical but I don't know why people rag on it as if people treat it that way and that it's a negative. Losing a fight, to anyone, shows you were once the lesser man on that night. Beating everyone shows that was never the case (obviously, everyone's own scoring of fights factor in here). You judge fighters by who they fought and THE PERFORMANCE in those fights. Losing in most cases, with the standards of a HOF'er, isn't a good performance.

In today's day and age with less fights, losing those fights means much more than it once was. The average contemporary top 10 contender has far less fights than the average top 10 contender of decades past. So, losses mean more when you have less fights to some degree.

It has to have some meaning in that only 5 or 6 champions have ever retired undefeated, and nobody talks or knows the names of the 2 who were lesser titlists who retired young with few defenses and no top wins; because they don't warrant the praise over many others. Marciano, Ricardo, and Calzaghe aren't overrated by anyone because of their zero. It helps them. Why? Because their resume is full of victories over enough quality opponents to warrant discussion among top fighters in each of their divisions; and did enough to become consensus first ballot HOF'ers... If anything, those guys receive some weird criticism regarding having maintained an undefeated record.

To deny the difficulty of being a champion who fought multiple top opponents and to never lose is more than a little odd.
