I remember reading it somewhere, but there is no official source.

The backup pair was approved by commission and both sides were suppose to work out the dispute themselves. Considering this all happened a day before the fight, the only logical solution is to throw money at it, and there wouldn't be any public announcement cause it would sound worse than it was.

No, he objected to the blue gloves and the NSAC deemed them unacceptable. He then objected to the red pair, but the NSAC said they were fine. Mayweather had no legal grounds to take away his choice to wear the red ones.

 

Perhaps they did pay him to wear another pair. They certainly couldn't force him to under the rules and they sure as hell weren't going to walk away from the fight. Maidana's team knew this, too, because they were talking about filing a lawsuit if Mayweather tried to walk over the gloves.
