Unlike yourself dear lady Fay, who never gets it right. There is another fool like you above who claims Leonard was a legitimate Light Heavy champion. Best you import your self appointed wisdom to him on Catchweights.

You could both have a Leonard love in.:lol:

I was wrong on Benitez, it was a year earlier ,and the second Hearns fight was obviously a draw which Tommy won imo.

Fair play to you for admitting both. I have no problem with anyone picking Leonard to win against Mayweather, and I believe a debate over their respective skills would be both lively, and scholarly. It is this ridiculous assumption that Leonard's size strength, and power would be the decisive factors that makes my skin crawl.

Other than a severely dehydrated Hearns in their first fight, when has Leonard ever walked through a " top class " opponents punches and simply overpowered them?

When in Mayweather's career has he looked susceptible to an opponent's size, strength, or power?

I haven't factored Leonard's strength into the equation and ,though he hit harder than Floyd it would not be a stoppage ,imo.
I just think Leonard has the tools to land enough on Mayweather to take a decision. This is partly based on the Floyd ODH fight.
I pick Hearns to beat Floyd at 147 too.
Keith Thurman would give Floyd a very hard night because of his hand speed, but when he throws he leaves himself open, not wise against a sharpshooter like Floyd.

Unlike most I think Floyd did well against Maidana who fought a sensible fight after all Floyd is 37.. No one around is going to outbox Floyd least of all Maidana ,so rough him up turn it into a brawl.
Problem was the Argentinian could not maintain that frenzied pace, and Floyd seems as comfortable under pressure on the ropes as Benitez was.

The debate is supposed to be with both in their primes. My point is Mayweather's ring IQ is at least equal to that of Leonard. SRL would be facing a man who is equally adept at controlling both the pace of the fight, and the distance between the combatants.

Mayweather is also clever enough to know that going to the ropes and adopting the philly shell defence would play into Leonards hand, who would just go to him, throw eye catching flurries then back off.

This fight would have to be at ring centre, and it would come down to who controlled things from there.

He got taken to school by a smaller man fighting in his weight class for the first time and who had appeared once in five years. Beautiful thing :good

since when is a split decision, especially a robbery like Hagler srl, a schooling?

Ever notice that no matter how hard Leonard tries to impress, something always takes the luster off of it?

LEONARD was schooled by Norris losing the first round, the second by two points, the third by two points, the forth, the fifth, sixth, seventh by two points, eight, ninth by two points, tenth by two points, etc

    Get the picture?

now that u have been properly educated on what makes up a schooling, u ccan further appreciate the Camacho fight in which we there was a repeat that ended BEAUTIFULLY by knockout. Ray had a magical head that night becuz of the way it turned into a giant bruise! :dead

and they said he couldnt be knocked out!

I'd say that was game set and match Rooster.:good

There is another thread comparing Leonards " skills " to James Toney.

I don't care if Toney is over 40, walks straight out of a Burger King after a 12 hour binge of drinking coke and eating the crap they serve. straight into the changing rooms, and into the ring, NO ONE, and I mean no one is ever going to beat the **** out of him, then stop the guy.

    That is pure boxing skill.

How many Heavyweights stopped Holyfield? Yet the former Middleweight Toney drops him with a body shot forcing the corner to chuck the towel in.

I would agree with you but Leonard isnt a great pressure fighter (see Bonds, Howard, Hearns, Norris)

on the rare occasions Leonard does get in (see Norris) all Floyd has to do is slip the infrequent rushes of a clumsy Leonard or tie him up

He can box well but taking the lead has never been his forte

I'd say so Foxy. Ray never could hit a guy on the move. Thats what happens when you take a step up in class; your opponents no longer bear a resmblance to Donny Lalonde, Dave Green, Andy Price, Kevin Howard, Ayub Kalule or Hagler who was quite the stiff by his last fight

and while Leonard was a fair boxer in his on right, he couldnt box the way Norris could and believe me, it SHOWED

Toney's accomplishments were a bit more impressive than Leonard's (stopped unbeaten Micheal Nunn in only his second year as pro)

we all remember tehe Nunn fight, the same man who took out the elite WBA champ in one and the same many whom leonard trembled at the mere mention of

Ray Charles Leonard by clear decision or late round TKO. Why TKO? Why not? Mayweather is durable but he's never faced someone like Sugar Ray Leonard. Leonard was fast accurate and powerful. Leonard was hard to hit and his chin was one of the best. Leonard really had it all.

Leonard stopped Benitez and Hearns. He made Duran quit. And he beat Hagler when noone else could. Nothing Mayweather has done compares to this.

I love how the revisionist try to make Hagler out to be washed up when he fought Leonard.

Leonard had not fought in 3 years. Prior to that fight he had not fought in 2 years. He had one fight in the last 5 years and that was to Kevin Howard (KO9). Leonard did not look greta vs. Howard and was even dropped in the fight.

Leonard had never fought at MW before and had only fought at JMW once (KO9 Ayub Kalule).

Despite all of this Leonard was going to fight the P4P best fighter in the world. WHo was naturally bigger and stronger than Leonard... and was a fvcking monster at MW. Hagler was supposed to destroy Leonard!

Hagler fought 3 times in '83, 2 times in '84, once in '85, and once in '86. He fought Leonard in '87, a year after his previou fight. He was fighting less frequently but he had no signs of being faded. Hagler trained very well, his camp was longer than usual, and he looked great. People thought Leonard was crazy for taking on Hagler.

Just a question for Rooster. I know you picked Norris to beat Leonard, I did myself. Who did you pick at the time to win the Leonard Hagler fight? I've got to say I fancied Hagler.

why shouldnt I favor Terry as a fighter? was he not the better fighter? He dominated, didnt he?

as the saying goes, "to the victor go the spoils" and you're just going to have to live with the fact, that's how Leonard's career wound up

He shouldve retired after the Hagler fight, then no one wouldve known

wouldve known that young up N comer Norris was to come along with a brilliant, no, PERFECT strategy, and use it to expose Sugar's limitations; Ray Leonard was only a runner.

That night, Norris was not unlike a Davinci, a Monet, he brilliant strokes, painting Leonard up & down, while never allowing himself to be touched. What could Ray DO??? :think

whenever he got within range of Terry to work the body, Terry tied him up. What could he do?

he couldnt deal with him from the outside,,, and he couldnt cope with him on the inside!

Terry showed us that not only do u have to have the perfect fight plan, u have to have the ability, the speed, to carry it out

and that's what he did. he did it so well, that by the start of the third, he had Ray intimidated, aye, intimidated and even more - cringing, cowering along the ropes

and by the tenth, Terry's well executed plan had both Ray Leonard AND Dr. Pacheco in tears. it was great

PS: your sarcasm & bitterness doesnt compare with my creative insults

When I first witnessed Terry in his defeat to Jackson, just before the end, I was super impressed by Terry's speed & slickness. I know he couldnt whip Jackson but Ray Leonard was another story

and guess what? Terry got his chance yet again as he shocked a Miami crowd in winning the title anyways

sometimes, stories Do have happy endings

    but wait, it gets BETTER

In December 1990, I caught the signing of his fight with Leonard and it was then that I realized Ray was in for a devastating defeat. I was so excited, I couldnt sleep that night and you can be sure that when the night came to see it, I was there

Ray couldnt do nothing just like I had foreseen. it was all one way traffic as Ray couldnt find a willing punching bag, and exhausted himself hitting air all night. here a miss there a miss, this went on every round.

like they say, cant hit what isnt there!

the Hagler fight, I was expecting Hagler to win until I saw him spar with the Weaver boys out in PS. His reflexes had failed him, was completely impotent, and completely outsped. he didnt belong in the ring with anyone and I estimated that he was now a 4 round fighter at best

However, I didnt know against Leonard until I saw clips of him in. I think it was the last couple days in March I saw him doing bag work and thought he looked a very sharp. From what I saw in sparring, Marv's chances diminished. Then I saw a clip of Marvin show up at Caesars (on film) and looked apprehensive for some reason. I knew the signs surmised Hagler was vulnerable and his past reputation couldnt compensate for a lack of reflexes

A couple days later, Arum too had that feeling and publically said "this is the one time I think Hagler can actually lose"

it was sad watching Hagler in the 12th round still trading jabs with a man that wouldnt have lasted 10 seconds with him in his prime

to make a long story short, it turns out I was right about both fights - and HOW
