Louis looked suspect vs Italian two ton tony as well. Serious boxing fans know Louis had trouble with faster boxer mover types. Calzaghe had a chance to win
The only interesting things about this thread are that it has gone 4 pages, and that some people are treating the subject as though it is realistic. I think the next one should be Manny Pac v Roy Jones Jr.
Sure. Approximately the same chance Sugar Ray Leonard would have. Calz was 180 cm in height, Sugar Ray was 178 cm. Calz was 185 cm in reach, Sugar Ray was 188 cm. Calz was heavier/bigger. Sugar Ray was levels above in talent, far far quicker, and compared to Leonard, Calz moved like a sloth. They all even out and the chances are pretty much the same. So, if you can convince yourself that Calz has a chance to win, then Sugar Ray also has a chance to win because he is two classes more talented than Calz and the size differential isn't all that much really. Louis will land more easily on the bigger Calz - who had negligible defense - and will miss a lot on the slightly smaller Leonard who was very quick. Makes about as much sense. I'd give Sugar Ray Leonard a much MUCH better chance to get a decision over Calzaghe than Calzaghe getting one over Joe Louis. Or, I'd take the smaller Marvin Hagler to straight out beat Joe Calzaghe in ANY situation and there is no chance Marvin beats Joe Louis.
I'd pick Calzaghe to beat Hagler ALL day EVERYDAY with consummate ease, but neither of them beat Joe Louis on a bad day. In fact if they were both in the ring together the 1951 version of Louis KO's the pair of them in the same fight.
Well, you got the second part completely right so you deserve credit for that. I'd pick Hagler to light Joe up with the far cleaner and precise work and beat him up late. I'd pick Calzaghe to beat Will McIntyre ALL day EVERYDAY with consummate ease. Whatever that's worth to ya.
Hagler NEVER EVER fought anyone with the hand speed " combined " with volume of punches that Calzaghe brought to the ring. Instead of those 20 second flurries that Leonard used to catch the judges eyes at the end of every round, Calzaghe would be doing it for the vast majority of the time. I'd pick Hagler to beat that idiot from Ray Leonard, and Stallone's boxing show that Calzaghe disposed of, all day EVERYDAY if thats any use to you.:good
will McIntyre was very misunderstood. if he hadn't been such a subnational, he wold have been HW champion of the world. that's why joe cal picked him instead of picking up a defeat to antwun echols. why not beat an unknown potential HW ATG world champion rather than get beat by a very good smw? always the cowardzaghe way.
Will McIntyre beats leonard and hagler in the same night, same ring, simultaneously. by the cowardzaghe way.
Louis could lose. He struggled with men the size of Calzaghe and even smaller. Calzaghe has the quick moving style to bother leadfoot Louis. The fact that Calzaghe is a southpaw would make it interesting as well.
Calzaghe, as good as he was, was definitely no Billy Conn,...not stylewise or physically. No comparison. I'd like to see a Conn vs Calzaghe thread instead of this one. It would be a one sided thrashing for Conn, I believe. Louis would have killed Calzaghe.
People look at the Conn fight as the rule and the first one was the exception .. nine out of ten times Louis would have beaten Conn much easier like he did in the rematch .. look how he destroyed a likely better John Henry Lewis .. Calzaghe would not last a round ..
