sergio martinez "i will not alow ggg to beat me"

I have, for quite a while, felt that Martinez will fight him based on his performance against Cotto.
If he has another though night then he will probably retire.

Well - that's a little disingenuous since he doesn't actually mention Golovkin, but he uses almost the same words in an article from a few months back, and it does seem likely that GGG is who he's refering to - after all there ain't so many top MWs who tend to spend so much time breaking their opponents down on the ropes.

My reading of it is slightly different though, I don't think he's saying 'I'm not gonna fight Golovkin' more 'I'm not gonna fight Golovkin if I don't feel my body is up to it anymore' - he's essentially acknowledging that he no longer has the physical attributes he did in his prime and he's not gonna go into a fight he's not sure he can win just for the sake of payday or legacy.

I want to see a Maravilla vs Golovkin fight as much as anyone, but it'd be pretty meaningless if we see a Maravilla even further diminished from the one that struggled with Murray. I'm more than happy to see how Maravilla shows in the Cotto fight and if he looks bad (but still wins) then I don't care much if GGG - Maravilla doesn't happen. If we see some of the ***y Sergio of c. 2010 - 12 however, I'll be very disappointed if we don't get a GGG - Maravilla fight before Sergio retires.

 

When exactly has Martinez ever "ducked" GGG? Or anyone for that matter?

Was it when GGG was a nobody? Or was it when Martinez was recovering from injuries?

 

He hasn't ducked GGG.

And FWIW as much as I'd like to see GGG vs Maravilla, the Cotto fight serves a dual purpose of both giving Sergio a well deserved payday and establishing how much he has left and whether a Golovkin (or other top MW) fight is even meaningful any more.

I like Maravilla, but when it comes to Golovkin he's just like the rest...

 

So, Carl Froch has openly stated he'd never fight Golovkin, and Martinez has stated it in an indirect way. It doesn't mean anything else.

These are two guys in the Top 10 P4P. Why would anyone else other than 'Ward' want to fight him? He hits too hard and in a way which is damaging to someones career.

 

Maravillas refering to GGGs drawing power - his popularity, not his ability as a fighter. That said, however, Golovkin is now without a doubt the biggest fight available for Maravilla at 160. The only richer fights would be Floyd or Nelo at 154 (though Nelo might come up to 160) - but AFAIK Sergio will still have an HBO date remaining after Cotto.

If Maravilla still looks even close to his best against Cotto, GGG oughta be next.

The man is a lot older than GGG, and has a bad knee. He fought Paul Williams twice, Pavlik, Chavez Jr. (Who's better than most people give him credit for), Murray, Barker (who went on to become a champion), and a few other contenders. You can't knock the man for knowing what's best for him. If he doesn't feel he's healthy enough for the fight, good for him. I don't want to see my favorite fighter getting hurt because of pride. Muhammad Ali should be all the evidence we need to know that sometimes fighters stick around longer than they really should.
