The Brown Bomber versus Joe Jeannette,Sam McVey, Sam Langford,and Harry Wills. Fifteen rounds, 40's gloves, prime for prime. Is it a clean sweep for him ,or does one or more upset him?
Louis destroys them. On available footage (though to be fair the footage of the old timers isn't that great) Louis is streets in front. That said Louis has some of the most impressive filmed footage of any fighter, from any division I've ever seen. He was a tremendous talent and I'd back late 30's to 1946 Joe to beat virtually anyone on most given nights.
Well said.! At 200 pounds, Louis was very powerful and lithe as a panther. a perfect weight for a heavyweight. Strong enough to lift Primo Carnera from a clinch and deposit him a distance away. My favourite heavyweight along with the much maligned prime Manassa Mauler...In H2H fights.
I can't comment on every single one of those guys as I haven't seen much of them. But from what I watched of Harry Wills, I think Louis would have a huge stylistic advantage. Wills appeared to have the tendency to jut his chin forward while keeping his hands dangerously low, which is a dangerous stance against the greatest combination puncher of all time and with tremendous hand speed. My thinking is that Wills would get hit often and badly.
Joe Louis actually did box an exhibition with Harry Wills in the late '40s and reportedly told him "I'm glad I didn't have to fight you when you were younger". Even so, from what I have seen and read about Wills, Louis stylistically would be a bad match for him. I believe Joe would do a clean sweep of these much-feared fighters, but they would all probably be interesting fights. I would especially like to see Louis-Langford.

Louis would had some problems with Langford. Langford could crack and had all of the defense that you would need. I am not sure if he can take a full on Louis combination and remain conscience but if he were to connect with regularity I think things could be pretty hairy in there for JL.
I could honestly see one of them upseting him. Langford would be a very dangerous match for him, and Jeanette could give him problems. Can't realy see him loosing to McVea.
I think of the three mentioned by you Jeannette would be his easiest opponent. McVey was a hooker,B Baer ,and Galento dropped him with that punch. I think Louis stops Wills. Langford is the danger man for me, he had the power to get the job done, but I gingerly go with Louis.
You couldn't be surprised if Langford pulled it out of the bag, or rather thumped it to the floor, but (with this in mind) Louis and Chappie might just sculpt the perfect battle plan. Jeanette I see causing trouble before a long right pings him in under ten. McVea would stage a superb shoot-out before losing to a man who knows how to regroup and layer his attack.
If Langford manages to land the left hook ala Galento, Louis won't be getting back up. If he does, he will be finished very shortly after. One favors Louis, but Sam is a VERY live opponent.
If Louis came up in that era, with those fighters, he would have his share of losses. Hard to say where he would have been in the pack. Louis was able to advance further because he came along later, and was brought up by a great trainer in Jack Blackburn IMO. I think it would be fair to say that Louis would have been at the top or near it of that era given his talent That said, prime for prime, fights with Wills and especially Langford would have been interesting.
