If you're a titlist with the WBA, WBO, WBC or IBF strap, why pay a duplicate fee for a shitty title that's irrelevant like the IBO title? Noticed that Jeff Lacy did this. Is it hedging in case of loss so the lesser title can be leveraged for a TV fight? Or what? RJJ was the king of holding shitty minor titles even when he unified.
Ask Roy Jones, Wladimir Klitschko, and Gennady Golovkin... I see no reason why they carried their additional minor belts around for so long. For a guy like Oosthuizen or Yordan, it made perfect sense. They weren't good enough to really contend for or to win the big titles and having "a title" is better than a "non title fight" on the advertisements. Donaire recently decided against paying the fees to compete for Vetyeka's IBO title.
I remember Hatton had the IBO belt. I think it was the Pacquiao fight when Buffer said for the IBO belt. **** that ****! Hatton was THEE Jr. Welterweight champion of the world. They should call that out instead of some ******* jack belt like the IBO
The IBO has the best ranking system out of the whole lot of them.and if ya the champ u are not forced to fight ya mandatory..!
Makes sense to hold various titles as a contender or even what Hatton did to build up his resume. But as a champion with a legit title, why hold the IBA title? Makes no sense.
What is major downside? Minor titles likely have far smaller sanctioning fees. You think Roy Jones cared, or Wladimir Klitschko cares about those sorts of sanctioning fees? If I were the champ, I would grab every version of every belt that I could find. It would eliminate others from claiming that they too are "champions".
I agree. I think some the ranking systems or policies or the other smaller organisations are stronger than the larger. The others are over political. Wish there was an organisation that came along that had an honourable ranking system that it stuck to and a clear rules with regards to mandatories etc.
The IBO could be a good system if not manipulated wrongly as is rife in Australia. I don't see any major problems with it in other countries but then again it may be certain match ups that have happened here in Oz which affects my judgement. Then again Hopkins might be right he didn't bother paying the fee when he beat Tarver,Pascal but for lesser fighters it's probably better than nothing.
There's no doubt about that. An unrealistic expectation has developed that every single fight should be contested for a belt and some of them are just made up out of thin air by the promoter for that particular fight.
