I think to be fair the referees do not use it as an excuse, in this thread I brought it up.

I agree boxing is a 'calculated risk', and there will be further deaths and injuries, but it is important that administrators and officials minimize that risk as often fighters are prepared to go 'above and beyond' what should be tolerated.

 

The point is that it's so clear that it's not about protecting the fighter at all. Otherwise the teak-tough Ghanians and Lituanian busdrivers of this world would have their fair share of premature stoppages in their favor too.
But you never ever see one when a British fighter is doing a little unscripted dance against one of them.

 

But that is boxing as a whole, not just British boxing. Watch Gonzales/CoggiI in Argentina or Holmes/Snipes for two examples of inept officiating outside this Country.

British boxing has never been safer. British boxing has never been cleaner. British boxing is thanks in part to Olympic money, building a depth in quality not seen this side of the Second World War.

The glass is very much half full. And even of you still believe in this 'British Stoppage' spin, remember plenty of good can come from it. For starters the Biggest domestic fight this Country has seen for perhaps twenty odd years (Froch/GrovesII)...

If it's about safety, I'd rather they just banned boxing in this country.
Because too many of these 'humanitarian' stoppages happen to look like corruption/favouritism/injustice.

Now they are even using these controversies to contrive big-money PPV rematches, just like they do with the bad judges' decisions.

Let's end the confusion one way or the other.
Boxing is dangerous, immoral so ban it .... OR ... continue it, but in a FAIR, SPORTING manner, where both fighters are given an equal chance to win.

 

He had a broken jaw, eye was closing and he was eating right hands, the ref could have let it go on but I understand the decision.

No offence but there is no confusion. Boxing has always had a political aspect to it, that is part of its attraction, it is a grey sport, not a black and white one. I for one would not want that to change.
