I respect your opinion, but it doesn't make sense to me. Just because he only fought Hopkins at 160, before going to 168, why does that mean he definitely loses to those MW's? He was 24 when he left 160, and he was big for the weight. He was around 170 in some fights. Sure he looked his best at 168, but that's because he beat Toney there. But in terms of speed and skills, there wasn't much difference between Roy at 160 and 168. It's not like he was a completely different fighter, he'd just matured a little. Ray Leonard was past his best at MW. So was Hearns. Marvin would have given Roy a good fight, but Roy would have been much bigger, stronger and faster. Again, I respect your opinion, but I don't see how you can say that most of those guys would definitely have beaten him, just because he didn't do a deal at the weight. There was only 18 months between the Hopkins fight and the Toney one, and he had an injured hand against Hopkins.
It's like Groundhog Day on here. There's no need to post those opinions up from 2008. We know that you've purposely left out just as many people who thought Joe would win. But it's all irrelevant anyway. Joe cashed out. Nothing wrong with that, but a bit of honesty would have been nice, instead of him repeatedly contradicting himself.
Wow, great post buddy. You did a lot of research and brought some historical perspective to that great Jones, Calzaghe fight. It was a great back and forth battle for over seven rounds. The great Manny Steward was saying in the seventh round that the fight could go either way. People forget how good that fight was because Joe took over late and dominated. Watch that fight on Youtube when you have the time. Joe Calzaghe looks like a typical male model on a cover of Gentleman's Quarterly but in that Jones's fight he showed he was a real mean sucker and really enjoyed hurting and humiliating Jones in the late rounds.
Why are you trying argue against what Joe himself said? I can show you links before Roy fought Joe, where he said he felt like he was 27, and he was back in love with the sport. But it means nothing. He was still almost 40, and could no longer fight at the top level. We know that on three occasions Joe dismissed Roy. He even dismissed Tarver, by saying that Tarver had done nothing apart from knocking out a washed up Roy. He was obviously referring to 2004. So in Joe's own opinion, he thought Roy was washed up four years before he fought him. Again, other than Joe getting a nice pay day and Roy's name on his resume, the fight was like what Joe had said it would be like in his autobiography - pointless.
Prime Roy at 160lbs i cant think of anyone who beats him. Maybe SRR but thats about it. Tommy Hearns? Not with that chin.
I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not? Bailey's post wasn't a great post. Just type into Google - Roy Jones Jr vs Calzaghe predictions. He's deliberately missed out all of the guys that picked Joe. Back to the fight. It was a joke. Joe sticking his chin out against a guy who he said was shot, and he'd be disappointed to fight at that point? Also, go and check out what Joe said in 2003. If he didn't get paid the Crown Jewels it wasn't worth the RISK. Yet he was happy to take a 50/50 deal in 2008, instead of fighting Pavlik.
The fight was no joke. It was a back and forth battle for over 7 rounds. Jones was still very fast and hit very hard back then. Joe adjusted to Jones's power and took over. Would Joe defeat Roy in their respective primes? No, of course not. Joe Calzaghe had tremendous talent but couldn't beat a prime Jones.
If that's what you think, and you enjoyed it, then I respect your opinion. But boxing is all about levels, and the timing of the fights. Roy had already been outboxed and knocked out by Tarver and Johnson over four years earlier. Joe was a great fighter. Roy hadn't won at the top level for five years and was approaching 40. The fight wouldn't have been as bad, had Joe not killed it before the contracts were signed, by saying what he did. If you sat in a studio and give a live interview, and you said that a potential opponent is past his best, and you'd be disappointed to fight the guy, then you couldn't expect any sort of credit, if you then rang him up afterwards to make the fight. That's Joe all over. A guy that's contradicted himself numerous times throughout the years. He even had the audacity at the press conference, to say that Roy was back to his best after three great wins. Three great wins? Three decisions over Ajamu, Hanshaw and Tito who couldn't even make the 170 catchweight? That's why I class the fight as a joke.
who do you think he ducked at SMW? for some reason, you were previously trying to make an argument for froch being better than calzaghe, even though froch was clearly never the best at SMW
Jones was older, had more fights, been KO'd brutally twice previously and hadnt held a legitimate title in over 3 years. Calzaghe was undefeated, younger, and no lobger killing himself to make 168. So who do YOU think was more shot?
H2H @ MW? Nobody. He beats them all. Same @ SMW. Roy made great fighters look like club fighters. That's a fact. The man went up to HEAVYWEIGHT and won a world title! Speaks volumes. Fact is, is that if Roy had retired after the Ruiz win, he'd be Top 5 of all time.
