Not really, no. He got some very close decisions over an old man.He got KTFO by Froch and Abraham, how good can he be?

2006 after Floyd moved up Hatton and Cotto were considered the best at 140. Many thought Cotto would beat Hatton.

No he didn't. Pavlik beat one top guy (Taylor) who wasn't even that good.

Why did he lose to Trout 111-117, 111-117 and 109-119?

He outboxed Mosley for 3 rounds, he outfought him for the first 9 & decided he had enough & got on his bike for the last 3, as for Floyd he applied pressure & tried to make Floyd fight.
Cotto thinks he's a better boxer than he actually is, Cotto is a great come forward pressure fighter with a murderous left hook to the body, he belongs at 147 where he can apply his pressure & strength, at 154 it was clear he was too small for the division, the light middleweights are too strong for him never mind the middleweights.
I'd love for Cotto to go back down to 147 where he belongs, he can make some very very good fights there, its unfortunate that Pacquiao ran his ass out the division.

It's about the mindset. Cotto was looking at Trout like Sergio is looking at him. Not a good thing. It is very possible that it will lead to his undoing.

This is my first post, but a long time reader of this forum.

People have a tendency to not understand the difference between popularity of opponents and quality of opponents.

WW and LWW were more popular divisions at the time when Cotto fought there and his opponents had more name recognition and fame, therefore because people knew them very well it seemed very impressive when Cotto beat alot of these Names however if you pit Martinez against anyone who Cotto fought at those weights he would handle and KO the majority of them with ease.

Cotto has a huge PR fan base who have been willing to overlook how weak he's historically been against A level opponents and his struggles against B level opponents.

Cotto was destroyed by Pacquiao had 2 competitive rounds.
Cotto did better than many against Floyd, but lost more decisively than Maidana.
He was Beaten by Tony once and the 2nd fight was going the same way at the time of the lucky stoppage.
Trout humiliated Cotto and busted his face up with his featherfists.

Now on to who he beat.
Mayorga was beating Cotto up and broke his hand causing a stoppage.
Mosley was very close I had Shane winning.
Clottey was very close it could have been a draw.
Foreman hurt his leg who knows how close it would have been.
Judah stunned him in 1st round and was weaked by many lowblows.
Paulie lost but was a very competitive fight, Cotto couldn't stop him but Hatton and Khan did.

Martinez would Probably KO all of them and outbox Margarito if he had a second shot at him, Sergio improved vastly since he was a little green kid 14 years ago. He'd been boxing 2 or 3 years at the time, Margarito started at 8.

However Martinez has fought good competition who no one knows because the middleweight division hasn't been as popular lately. They were not well known which doesn't mean they aren't quality.

Think had Golovkin came here with no fanfare or hype and Sergio beat him they would say oh look Sergio beats another Euro-Bum, But the reality is Cotto would lose to all easily that Martinez has beat.

Chavez would destroyed MC with ease as would Rubio Vera Zbik and maybe even Lee.
Williams lost to Quintana But KO'd him 1st Rd of 2nd Fight. Cotto would not stand close to a chance with Williams.
Pavlik beat Taylor in 7 it took Froch 12, Hopkins lost to him twice. Does anyone really think Cotto could beat them.
Macklin and Murray beat Sturm but were robbed the same way Sturm was when he should have beaten De La Hoya. Yes Martinez outpointed Murray even when badly injured and won, though it was close.
Dzinziruk dominated Konecny who made Quillen look really bad all three would beat Cotto.

Cotto can barely beat JMW there is not one MW he could beat. So no its not a Step Up For Maravilla.

Sergio is sleeping on Cotto and that will be his undoing.

I think Sergio is in trouble and he knows it. His little performance in the interview with Max just made him look pathetic to me. He's trying to hype the fight but I think he knows he's had too many injuries. Just wants one big payday.

Cotto would be a very good name on Sergio's resume, but let's not fool ourselves into thinking this is a "step-up" in competition for Maravilla.

This is the same guy who fought Paul Williams twice. I've been a big fan of Cotto's since the early 2000's when he was fighting on boxing after dark, but to me he's not a tougher fighter than a prime Paul Williams.

If Sergio doesn't knock Cotto out quick, he's hurt and done.

Sergio, needs to execute his game plan on Cotto quickly. I don't believe Martinez can defend him self from an articulate and well seasoned fighter for 12 rounds. His injuries will flourish after a few rounds...

well said. i like cotto but hes been a primadonna and has done NOTHING to get a shot at the title except lose 2 out of his last 3 at junior middleweight.
cant wait for sergio to beat his ass and send him back to the midget division where he is from

ya got it all figured out eh because of his interview with max? :rofl
gee, an original statement talking about his physical injuries being a factor :patsch

even if he can barley walk, he can tough out 48 minutes against the 5 foot 7 cotto is biggest knock outs at 154 are delvin rodriguez and 39 year old mayorga.....i guess you cant count yuri foremans knee injury as a "ko" and margaritos swollen eye..... sergio is gonna walk right through him

    Two questions:

    - how will Cotto react when is hit with the first flush straight left?

    - if Cotto is not able to ko Martinez early... how will his face look like after eating 200 jabs?
