Hey guys. My first post. First let me say that I'm rediscovering the sport after about 23 years. Spectating....I've never boxed in my life - nor do I plan to at 46 years old. I'm posting because I want to get and stay fit. So last night I started boxing class. I used the gym's gloves (I THINK they were 12oz). They were broken in and comfortable. I didn't like the thought of using community gloves so I decided to get a pair of my own. Yes - a cheap pair because I'm not even sure what I'm doing just yet. I got a pair of Everlast Advanced Training gloves - 12 oz. They're not comfortable at all. They seem small. Do I need to break them in or do they come in actual sizes? Any advice is welcome & very appreciated. I do notice that there is another thread titled 'What gloves to get' but I didn't want to hijack his post in case the mods want to merge the threads. Thanks
most of the people I train with use 12 oz twins gloves a few with fairtex and reyes we have a bag with old gloves in and most of them are everlast amongst other brands. try those gloves out for a few weeks most gloves will feel a bit small till you stretch them out a bit and they get drenched with sweat lol just try not to go all out on the pads and bags until you comfortable with them if you can get to a shop to try the gloves on would be better I've had two pairs of 12 oz twins gloves and the both had different sized hand compartments the most important thing at the moment is that you've started the class so just learn as you go
Thanks for the info. The class is only once a week and is at a city gym. I think if I like it, I'll join the boxing gym here in St. Pete. I know this is all basic and elementary but do I HAVE to use wrap just hitting mits and a bag ? Ha...I know how that must sound to you guys. It's probably the first thing that I shoulda learned.
Had my second class tonight but the first with wraps & my own gloves (Everlast Training. 12oz). Tonight my forearms & wrists are a little sore. I don't really mind but I didn't experience this last week. Is it just a matter of breaking in the gloves or muscle soreness from not working them much? O something else? I'm really doing this class for 'fun' fitness and have no plan on actually boxing (Im a bit too old to be getting hit :nut ). I wish it was more than once a week.
The wrist and hand soreness will go after you hands are used to hitting. Sometime it might feel like you sprained your wrist on impact, however like I said a few weeks and proper technique, you'll be fine.
Thanks. Even if class is only once a week, will my hands/wrists still get used to it? And it's mostly the wrists.
Yes it might take a bit longer though, also make sure you get 180 inch wraps to get a lot of support. I see I lot of people using 108 in wraps and it's almost pointless. Wou can also get knuckle guards made by various company's to put on your knuckle. This will give you some slack to get extra support on you wrist. Next, I'd get a good pair of gloves, you can get really good ones from anywhere from 80-150 bucks, or go up to 300+ for some winning or grant. I personally use Cleto Reyes, long cuff and good support, and I get plenty of hand protection despite some people having issues in that the department. I only paid 150 for 16oz which is the size I reccomend no matter what glove you get, but note, if you don't have large hands Reyes might be to big for you. So it's best to research and choose one you think is best. 150 may seem high but, for a good pair of gloves that will last years you really can't complain.
