The key to beating a fast handed fighter is the use of a steady jab. Once the jab is working everything else falls into place. Against Saildo, Loma showed very little signs of using the jab. He allowed Saildo to leap in with wide body punches and head shots and responded by stepping back and grabbing. Can Loma fight Russell the same way?
Russell is a much different fighter than Salido, so I'm sure Loma will take a different approach than he did against Salido. The odds on this fight are almost even, this should be a good scrap.
Saildo is the style of fighter when you should use your jab. Has Loma used his jab against Saildo he would have kept Saildo on the outside, scored points and probably would have won the fight. Instead, Loma used no jab, backed up constantly, before allowing Saildo to come inside and bang is body and balls. Saildo's style is the perfect example of when you should use a jab. :yep
Fast handed fighters in the amateurs are common, I would say Lomachenko Am experience should help him with Russells speed. Pro fights are obviously different and that is what Russell is hoping to show Lomachenko but I believe with a few fights Lomachenko should be able to show the foot work and upper body movement that he displayed at the elite amateur level, in the pro game over 12 rounds. Neither guy though has beat a top 10- 126 lbs fighter, so the winner will have some good fights afterwards.
Thanks for your response. Especially everything you replied with about the effective use of a jab. :good
Will everyone knows Lomachenko doesn't use the Jab often and I don't think he will use it much against Russell either. But his footwork and upper body movement he able tp deal with Russell's hand speed. ( Mainly talking about the skills he displayed in the Amateur game, must admit wasn't overly impressed against Salido.)
That's the thing. I just can't imagine how any fighter with over 300 amateur fights doesn't use the jab. It's too weird to imagine.:yep
Lomanchenko is almost 30. I thought he was younger. First he loses to a gatekeeper, then he turns 30. What a dissapointment.
Get what you are saying it is a technique you would expect someone with 300 fights to be great at, but at the same time he is a 2 time World and Olympic gold medallist as well as undefeated in the WSB 5 round fights. His style in amateurs seemed to rely on fighting at a high tempo changing the angles with his footwork and use of upper body movement to avoid his opponents punch and he would fire back with fast combos, always wondered how he would adapt to a slower paced 12 round fight and I think that is one of the things he appears be struggling with.
Gary is gonna beat the **** out of this guy, a jab won't help him. And I think Loma is late 20s not 30.
The jab is the most basic of boxing punches. It is an essential tool for a pure boxer to use in his arsenal. Loma showed he had one against Saildo a few times, but he failed to use it properly, or how you would expect a fighter with 300+ fighter and 30 Yo to use it. He would definitely need a jab to keep GRJ at the end of his punches.
Although the jab is good its not essential for a southpaw, look at pacman he's jab is non existent, freddie roach himself said the jab is not important for a southpaw
The jab is not as important for a southpaw when facing an orthodox fighter. However, both Russell and Loma are southpaws
I'd think that Tarver, Lara, and other Southpaws who use their right jabs to setup their straight left hands may disagree. :yep
