Agree. It certainly wasn`t terrible but calling it very good would be an overstatement. He did as you mentioned recover well.
Anyone who was down 10 times, and out twice did NOT have a good chin. Good chins belong to the La Motta's, McCalls, Hagler's and Chuvalo's of this world.
yes I agree. the way Baer hit, if he ever got one off, would indded put Joe down for the count. accept the word of one who knows and yes, his chin was just this side of Ali, Dempsey, and everyone else you said
I think Mendoza hit the nail best in these postings. If one thinks Joe had an excellent jaw in that he recovered from knockdowns and being stunned, so fairly often did Patterson/ Floyd got knocked down more then the rest but he also got up more then then all the others, did he have then an excellent jaw too? By comparison I don't think Conn or Farr's Sunday best would have buzzed Ali much nor Galento, Schmelling, or Braddock dumped him ever as an example of a top notch chin.
His chin was not bad at all. But people needed to look for some sort of weakness, and he could be rattled. He was so formidable in so many areas it made sense to stress that he was human and could be hurt, and was in fact possible to knock down and knock out.
He was a little predisposed to getting buzzed; feet close-knit and poised for counters, but cracking his chin required an evening of home runs. Furthermore, Louis had that mentality whereby a good sock woke him up. Like bedding a Mafia dame, success just meant failure was going to come down even harder. Max Baer, Tony Galento, Tami Mauriello - those that rattled Joe got bludgeoned.
Really ? And who has great chins then ? You basically listed the greatest chins of all time ... It matters who one fights ... Schmeling was a big right hand puncher. Braddock was a very good right hand puncher. Galento wax a big time puncher. Buddy Baer was a big time puncher. Joe Walcott was a big time puncher. Rocky Marciano was a big time puncher. There is no question that Louis fought and defeated more and better big time punchers than Jeffries, Johnson, Dempsey, Tunney, Marciano, Patterson, Liston and Frazier did ... I would only say some of the modern era guys like Tyson, Holyfield, Holmes and of course Ali fought more ...
Incorrect. Ali was dumped by Sonny Banks. Ali was rocked to his heals by blown up light heavyweight Doug Jones. Ali was rocked by Leon Spinks. It happens. If you don't think Ali could have been stunned if caught by a Braddock or a Galento than you don't know enough about these fighters ..
You may need to recalibrate your scale. Louis had not only a good but a very good chin (especially if defining that as encompassing in equal measure both Resistance to real or flasb knockdowns or being put on Queen St., and Recovery from those situations) while the four you listed had just about perfect chins, as perfect as mortals can have.
Joe Louis's chin is rated pretty much where it should be. Not the greatest among HW champs by any means, but certainly not the worst either. Clearly, he could be hurt, but it is also a measure of his greatness that he could overcome a so-so chin and be considered one of the two best HWs of all time.
