Does Frazier get enough credit for beating Ali in FOTC?

I agree MM... That fight alone, probably the biggest heavyweight fight ever, makes Joe an icon for the ages... I,m not saying the greatest,but major historical impact...

 

I just don't see how anyone can think he's getting sold short for a victory in a fight that is one of the most revered and talked about of all time, as well as being the very foundation for his name appearing on most top 10 lists. It's sort of like asking the question " Does Benjamin Franklin get enough credit for inventing electricity? "

 

Haha, good one I always felt that Joe gets full credit for his biggest victory... It,s almost impossible to downplay the fight,s historical significance. I agree this win alone puts him always in the top ten conversation... Hey,I,d like to add I truly enjoy talking `shop` with almost all of you guys. Save for two I like the varied opinions and solid input. I am not embarrassed to admit I have had my opinions changed and my eyes opened up as well on varied fighters and topics... My Dad and I shared a true love of boxing,all the stories. He passed a few years back,it,s nice to come on here and be able to rap about boxing...

Yes that win is written in stone

 

Ali, in the 60's moved alot more and hardly ever was on the ropes. He was slightly more active in his prime also. That Ali was almost if not unbeatable!

 

When has Frazier never received huge credit for this win?

 

Joe could have beaten anyone in any decade on that night,he was relentless in his goal to win,he fought every second of the 15 rounds. My hero.....

 

I think the 1971 fight gets overshadowed by The Thriller in Manila, to be honest. No coincidence that Ali won that one. Joe Frazier beat an Ali as close to prime as anyone. Ali was still very sharp that night and Joe took tremendous punishment; I don't think he was ever the same again.

But for one night, he was murder. I think he would have beaten most of the past and future champs that night, and no, I don't think this is generally acknowledged. Frazier gets grudging respect, while Ali gets excused for being rusty.

I think the fight was phenomenal, and the best of the 3; both guys were tremendous in it.

 

Ali, was never the same when he came back. Foreman, would of slaughtered joe at any point in his career for instance!!

 

Even Joe said Foreman was all wrong for him!

 

I, say again the nobody ever saw ali at his peak. would joe of beaten that ali from the late 60s, if he was not unfairly stripped?

 

I'm glad your doubling down on a point you know is off by deciding what fragments of greatness can be surgically removed according to your own formula .. Ali was never a classic boxer nor was he a puncher .. he was a extremely physically gifted athlete who utilized his exceptional skills and size to win .. he dominated because of is exceptional speed of hand and foot .. he never had it post exile and was never as good a fighter ..
