It's funny that people view seeing a sports psychologist as a weakness. Is the rest of training a sign of weakness? Should the truly strong never train? Any athlete can use a psychologist to improve their psychological skills. Every pro team and most top athletes use a sports psychologist. Everyone can use help with motivation, visualisation, goal setting etc.
He's not lying on a couch talking about how afraid of Groves he is.

In many cases I think its just placebo effect, but so what. If you get to thinking "well I saw this dude with a bunch of diplomas on his wall, did some stuff and exercises he told me - I'm ready to go now and got the edge" and go into your competition confident and focused you got your moneys worth. Even if the dude told you the secret to focus was digging and refilling holes in your backyard while humming yoga chants.

Jeremey from Peep Show once summed this up quite correctly.

"Therapy's not only for you (talking to Mark) and Tony Soprano and Jamie Theakston.
The common man needs therapy too!"

Groives has clearly gotten in his head.

Made himself comfortable up there, cracked open a beer, watching some TV...maybe re-decorated the place.

I dont like Froch's chances now

going to a psychologist is in itself a case of utter mental weakness

also, psychologists are as useful as a broken leg

nothing but poor man's psychiatrists who scam those who are weak of mind

If you've paid to see a psychologist you should be ashamed of yourself

I worked in a refugee camp and staff routinely saw psychologists to deal with the various occurences of violence and heartbreak you saw in such a place. Talking with a psychologist isn't like talking down the pub - good ones can really help you see Things in different perspectives and help you order your thoughts and feelings so you can focus on your job. As a result, I've once faced down a guy with a knife while staying completely calm and in the end defusing the situation.

You've got it mixed up, you see a psychiatrist if you've got a mental problem and need medication. A Psychologist is for anyone, including the Tiger Woods and Roger Federers of the world. Occasionally you get a guy like Michael Jordan who has already mastered visualisation and focusing techniques through their own work, but they are the exception rather than the norm.

Eddie: "Well done, lads. We've sold out Wembley, and now even the Yanks want see the pride of Britain in a good barney."

Carl: "It was me going off me onion that did it. Thanks to me, the gormless British public actually believes we're not chinas, Grovesy."

George: "Yes, well just remember who's going to be 'ringing his solicitor' any day now. Har har har!"

    (General laughter)

Carl: "Say, mate, fancy heading down to the ol' rub a dub dub for a pint and a bacon butty?"

George: "That's the dog's bollocks, mate. Lead on."

Fighters do this all the time. Bruno used one for the first Tyson fight and Tyson himself used to get hypnotized prior to each fight, this ended when he parted ways with Kevin Rooney. Taken directly from Tysons book. When i find the quote i might make a thread on it
