Manny Pacquiao Gives ‘Knockout’ Tips on Surviving Disasters

MANILA, The Philippines—World boxing champion Manny Pacquiao considers himself a survivor. Now he’s drawing on his fighting spirit to help people in Southeast Asia better prepare for the typhoons and earthquakes that frequently rock the region.

“I know what it is like to have nothing to eat, to live day-to-day not knowing how we will get through the week,” said Mr. Pacquiao, who grew up in a poor family. “When there were natural disasters our hardships would multiply, but we scraped by. Through courage, determination and some help, we survived.”

During my trip to Tacloban, it occurred to me the importance of educating the people on safe steps to prepare them when disasters strike,” said Mr. Pacquiao, who is also a congressman for a province in the southernmost island of Mindanao.
