1988 Tyson vs 1964 C Clay

There's a difference between struggling and dominating someone that is fighting to last the distance because their opponent is that much better than them. Donaire vs Mathebula comes to mind, something like 6" in height and reach and I think I gave Jeffrey 2 rounds. A **** poor fight, but it takes 2 to tango.

 

At their respective peaks, i feel Tyson was much better, he showed less weaknesses than Ali

If Tyson struggled with tall boxers then Ali enjoyed taking left hooks.

Fair point. Tyson in 88 was more proven than Clay in 64 for me.

What seperates them is what they did/didnt do after their returns

If neither of them had returned after their lay offs, an argument could be made that Tyson was greater than Ali.

 

Please , fight won long before they enter the ring , Tyson the most mentally fragile champ of all time against the strongest.

Yeah in those days fighters didn't make comments like: " I'm gonna make you my *****", or " I'm gonna eat your baby", or " I'm gonna drive your nose bone into your brain and kill you." not sure how Muhammad would react to those.

 

I tend to agree with this analysis. 1988 Tyson is one of the few fighters with similar foot and handspeed to Cassius Clay. And Tyson would have been the superior puncher in that fight. Both have excellent chins, so I don't see a stoppage either way. (Tyson may have been able to drop young Cassius, though).

Were they to fight a series of three or more, I would bet on Clay to make the necessary adjustments. But, in the scenario given here, he would have his hands very full with 1988 Tyson.

I don't remember Tyson doing much talking in the pre-fight stuff during his prime. In fact, I remember a 'man-child' freak with a huge neck and a girly, lisping whispering voice for most part.

Tyson started really going in for talking trash and saying outrageous things around the time that his fighting skills diminished.

 

The press had different standards in those days so the most interesting and profane comments probably went unrecorded.

We know Cassius Clay would love it if Mike to come with that kind of stuff.
