Ive said before the fight Froch rematching Groves does very little for his legacy. Many here disagreed.

So now Froch has two stoppage wins against an unheralded 20 fight something challenger who apart from talking a big game has zero track record, a suspect chin and no stamina to go 12 rounds at the elite level.

After beating Groves twice now, is Frochs track record now greatly enhanced or did he just waste a year of his prime when he could have had more defining fights?

the first fight was hugely controvercial, I'm guessing he took the rematch to clear any doubts about who is better, his two wins over Groves will show their true value as Groves career progresses

It's true that the wins aren't that significant atm. Froch had everything to lose and Little to gain from these two fights. Still, he beat a young, undefeated challenger and that's worth something. If Groves goes on to be a World Champion later in his career, the win may prove more significant.

It depends how you measure success. He did just win the biggest fight ever held in the UK - in front of an 80K sell out crowd in his countries national sports stadium for the biggest purse of his career to date.

A wasted year? If you say so.

Currently it does little for his legacy but that's because this was Groves first big test on the world stage. Impossible to say how this win will be looked at further down the line. Lewis win over Vitali at the time wasn't that special or even a top 10 win, it's now one of his best wins.

Probably as no big deal - but if he'd ducked the rematch it would have been the biggest deal of Froch's career - especially if Groves had gone on to establish himself - which now looks a little less likely than it did after the first fight.

Thats a very good point, I havent look at it like that. It remains to be seen if Groves can gain a world title at some point.

Is this the worst thread ever created?

Froch proplelled himself past Calzaghe last night in the ATG British rankings as far as im concerned.

I was convinced Froch was going to take a torrid UD or stoppage loss. They way he was beaten left and right in the first fight proved Groves was a real talent. Only true great fighters make agjustments and win dominatately in the rematch.
Joe never rematched Reid or Hopkins but he did rematch that guy he stopped in one round.
Froch cemented his legacy and ATG status last night. Great win.

Im a big fan of Froch and Groves but have to agree completely. The thing now is that people are watching SMW due to having an American SMW champ. It was watched when Lacy appeared. Had the division not been watched like previously, it wouldnt have been called a big win

As always, it depends on what happens next. Saying "so what?" is short-sighted for that reason.

IF Groves becomes the best British SMW of the next generation - which is reasonable to suppose as he beat DeGale and boxed brilliantly against Froch in the first fight, but we'll see - then that's a good scalp. If he becomes a minor contender to a good division, that's a good scalp. If he becomes a deeply significant contender to a good division, that's becoming a great scalp. If he is Ward's heir, that's a wonderful, wonderful pair of wins.

So, wait. Or say "this will never happen" and "that will never happen!" blah blah blah to "make you right" now. Either way is fine, I don't mind.

The fight was easily predictable and the outcome came a no surprise except to those many drunken Brits who pre-fight had Groves defeating Froch by KO.
Still, it is great management from Hearns to take a lemon event and sell 80,000 glasses of whiskey splashed lemon-aid for $60 dollars a glass for his fighter.

People are making the point now Froch just had an off night in the first fight. Froch was at his worst and still stopped a completely gassed out and overwhelmed Groves in the first fight. Froch at normal performance level lost only 2-3 rounds while knocking out Groves in 8 last night.

So no, these fights dont "propell" Froch anywhere right now. Maybe in a few years Groves can win a title or two and that will elevate Frochs stock. But right now it seems to me that if Froch had fought (and defeated) Chavez and Martinez instead of 2x Groves it would have been magnitudes bigger for him.

This forum as a whole picked Groves, or was at about six last night.

They've made him one of the most recognisable fighters in Britain, and therefore Europe. They've inflated his next purse, and earned him his career's best payday. So, he would disagree with you.

It is impossible for him to be "propelled" past Ward without beating Ward, but he's very clearly the #2 SMW, just as he was before these fights.

Whilst you may describe a prevailing attitude in America (i've no way of knowing), Froch is British and will be most interested in his reputation in Britain. And all over Britain today newspapers and television are using phrases like "sealed his legacy".

    So, disagree.
