I thought Larry Merchant retired, yet I have seen him at the last two fight?

I remember the "last" broadcast he was supposed to be on and they were doing flashbacks of his career and saying he was retiring. Now he was the one to interview Donaire and the other guy in the ring last night, and they pointed him out ringside doing another broadcast with Tim Bradley one of the last fight. What gives? Larry is an ATG commentator and if he is still around he needs to be back in the main spot. Put him in over Kellerman and Andre Ward for sure.

 

He works freelance now for different Promoters. He can't go to Showtime (was in his separation agreement with HBO per Fat Dan) but other than that he is free to work cards as he wishes.

 

Good. Merchant is the man and I am glad to see him at any time. His post fight interviews are always the best. Much better than that idiot Jim Grey over at showtime and better than Kellerman

 

Merchant would have told Floyd if Maidana had his puncher glove he would have knocked Floyd out to his face. He would have grilled Floyd why he's being a diva when the commission already approved the use of the gloves .

 

I would have LOVED to see Merchant do that interview! He also would have called bull**** on Floyd's "I fought that way on purpose to give the fans a good fight"

 

If I am not mistaken, Merchant has shown signs of dementia. Not terrible but kind of pregnant pauses, where he has lost his train of thought, to the extent HBO probably felt it was time for him to look for other opportunities. I agree Merchant can be pointed in his questioning, which is refreshing. I also agree that Jim Gray is a jerk. You get the feeling sometimes Jim Gray forgets people are not tuning in to listen to Jim Gray. Just interview the guy, Jim, don't impose yourself on him or browbeat him.

You're really praising him for his post-fight interviews one day after he was completely oblivious to his interviewee not answering in English, even declaring he understood before asking the next question?

Merchant is a sad joke. A blind nuthugger during his years with HBO displaying his nasty, blatant bias in every telecast. So much so, that HBO forced his "retirement" in part due to the disrespect he displayed towards Floyd Mayweather (which played a part in Mayweather defecting to SHO). Now he is employed by the company he constantly nuthugged, Top Rank, doing irrelevant telecasts, asking the same irrelevant long-winded questions. The man loves the sound of his own voice. Count me as one fan that is glad I don't have to hear it anymore.

 

He's most likely just doing part-time commentating with other networks. You must know that his job at HBO wasn't only to commentate, it was also a full-time job.

 

I think that $250 million had a little something to do with it. I don't think Floyd's that big of a diva that Larry Merchant hurting his feelings caused him to leave. Well, with Floyd who knows?

 

I wouldn't say the telecasts are irrelevant. He''s doing international feeds for the biggest fights, like Marquez/Alvarado and Martinez/Cotto.

He was the only one keeping HBO in check. Now they say whatever they want that feeds their corporate agenda and nobody is there to keep them in check.
