Guess we will see. A lot will depend on what Hearn thinks about it. Arum will do something to spoil Floyds date, whether he gets Hearn to agree to put Froch on that day is an unresolved question.

I also think your wrong about Martinez being a bigger name/draw in the US than Froch, especially after this weekend. As well as wrong about Arum's desire to strike back.

Its going to come down to whether he can get Hearn and Froch to back his play. That is not a given. HBO and Arum position is pretty easy to read, I am surprised you dont see it. Hearn and Froch angle is more difficult.

Wait, Froch is now a bigger draw in the States because he beat a Brittish fighter, in The UK, in a fight that was broadcasted in the afternoon in the States? I don't think so. You become bigger in The U.S by fighting in The U.S. Martinez has fought high profile fights in the States for years. Froch hasn't fought in the States since the Ward fight.

I love when so called fans of boxing pray on the downfall of a particular fighter or fighters events or ppv's. Only true fans want to see EVERY event do good whether they like the fighter or not. The hate for Mayweather is beyond disgust.:-(

If this does hold to be true then I hope both events get good ratings, ticket sales and promotion because it would be good for the sport of boxing.:good

It has happened before Arum put on a card at the Thomas and Mack (Martinez vs Chavez Jr) and GBP had the MGM Grand with Canelo vs Josesito Lopez on the same day.

Each fight is an individual event. PPV buys are a reflection of how much interest can be generated. Froch KOing a guy in front of 80k is noteworthy and marketable and not only has generated significant media attention in the US, but would get significant future media attention going into a big Vegas fight.

If Hearn decides to back this play, I can guarantee you it will be marketed. Eddie will be lining up all sorts of interviews in NYC on the sports desks and evangelize bringing the biggest best fights to the US as well as other angles. Froch is known to boxing fans, and a US fight would not be overshadowed by Floyd.

That and I think Floyd is losing the interest of the general public. I think his brand is very vulnerable right now, because he does not have any future fights that people are particularly interested in.

This fight would do good because their budget is nothing compared to a mayweather card. Therefore, fewer sales can still result in a profit and you just hurt a competitor.

Discussion has nothing to do with love or hate for Floyd or anyone else. Its about what Arum wants to do or not, and how well it would perform or not.

I think Arum and HBO have come to the realization that they need to play some hardball and get some respect because they have been pushed around quite a bit recently. Cruise control isnt going to work anymore. That means ponying up the $$ and actually competing , including for the big dates. That means expenditure and risk.

    Some disagree.

I think Floyds brand is currently vulnerable and resting its laurels on a perception of market invincibility, and they have become complacent.

    Some disagree.

Thats fine, but at least get it straight that it has nothing to do with love or hate.

Great Post:good and I agree with all of your post but the part about the general public losing interest isn't true. Floyd is one of the Top athletes if not THE top athlete in all of sports, he is one of the most popular athletes in the world. The general public and the entertainment world will always go to the fights and order the ppv, this won't stop no matter what other card is taking place that night. Do you think the loads of music stars, sports stars and movie stars that normally attend all of Floyd's fights will go to Chavez-Froch? Of course not. Even a simple look at their Twitter followers and you will see the difference between Mayweather and Chavez & Froch.

    Froch has 420k followers
    Chavez Jr. Has 138k followers

    Mayweather has 4.96 Million followers

So I would argue that opposite that the "general public" fully is interested in Mayweather especially with him being the highest paid athlete, its the general public who support his fights and order the ppvs who love watching Mayweather fight. The "general public" doesnt know who Chavez Jr or Froch are.:deal

I agree with your post overall, but, I wouldn't partially base how popular someone is based on twitter followers. People in North America are glued to their phones 24/7, while driving, hell even walking. You don't see that in other parts of the world. Hence foreign stars won't have as many followers.

No way, everyone is glued to their phones all over the world. People are always on their smart devices everywhere they go. Also Floyd having 4.96 million followers is a big deal because his Twitter is connected to all the other Social networks such as Facebook and Instagram which extends his reach even further. Not everyone has all 3 of those sites so he is giving out information constantly to a large amount of people around the world daily. Just that alone is priceless & invaluable promotion. And then those people who don't go to on social media that only go on gossip and entertainment sites they get to see Mayweather as well because his name is everywhere and every move he makes is under a microscope.

I've been to multiple parts of Spain, Italy, Greece, France, argentina,Colombia, panama, chile, peru, the cell phone obsession is not the same. People are experiencing their life in the flesh instead of a phone lol. Hell even in Puerto Rico, which technically is part of America, isn't anywhere close to as bad as NYC, la, Chicago, Toronto, etc. I only think its a gauge for america sports.

To support this, Sergio Martinez has 400k twitter followers yet his fight with Murray close to 40k fans at the event.

    this has to be bs

first question...which was already asked....has jr resigned with TR?

remember chavez/ggg that never came? remember why?....cant see chavez taking a big fight with bob unless he resigns or bob caves and gives chavez the number he wants....and chavez will probably ask for alot of money for a froch fight

The Twitter angle is interesting. I honestly wonder how much overlap there is between PPV customers and twitter followers. What type of people are following , how many are zombie accounts, etc.

In Floyds case there is plenty of evidence that he is something of an Urban cultural icon in the US. That combined with the fact that Twitter has a fairly high rate of account turnover, combined with the fact that people have been very interested in announcements regarding opponents in the past could all easily factor into a high follower count.

Not that having a social media presence is meaningless, its not at all. But even with 5m followers the Maidana event still performed only OK. The real question is who is following and why. Finding that out is difficult, and companies actually spend quite a bit of money trying to learn these things. Unfortunately they rarely share their findings, let alone their raw data.
